The Mechanical Equipment Development (MED) Branch at the Chalk River Laboratories designs, develops and builds equipment to support needs of the Canadian nuclear industry. A typical example of the equipment developed would be tooling to perform remote inspection of a nuclear facility. This opportunity is for a mechanical engineering technology student to contribute to a team that is designing new equipment, assembling and testing the equipment in lab facilities.

Year of study: 2nd and 3rd year of study

What you will be doing:

  • Contributing to design concepts and detailed design calculations, CAD and Finite Element modelling.
  • Assisting with lab testing of equipment.
  • Assessment and procurement of commercial items.
  • Analysis of data and technical report writing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • Education: Applicants should be Mechanical Engineering students (or similar discipline such as Aerospace).
  • Experience: Hands-on experience in a lab or industrial setting is an asset. Knowledge of or experience in a machine shop setting is an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Good knowledge of mechanical systems and solid mechanics is required.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
