Overview

Educational Deaf Interpreter (EDI) – Full-Time, Term. Halifax area, Nova Scotia, Canada. Contract position; one position available. Initial Posting Date: July 24, 2025. Application Deadline: Open until filled. Anticipated Start and End Date: End of August 2025 until end of June 2026. Location requires in-person services, not virtual. Competition #: 2025-46.

Responsibilities
  • Provides the Deaf student with ASL instruction in the classroom and social settings.
  • Supports the student in learning the differences between the home and classroom cultures.
  • Works alongside the classroom teacher, Supervisor of Educational Interpreting Services, Education Support Teacher - DHH, and ASL Specialists.
  • Collaborates with the educational team to support the transition from an Educational Deaf Interpreter to an Educational Interpreter.
What You Bring To The Table
  • Lived experience/first voice perspective as a Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing individual.
  • Native Fluency in ASL.
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Ability to obtain an ASLPI Rating from Sign Language Institute of Canada (SLIC).
  • Functional literacy in English.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborative when working within a team.
  • Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment.
  • Follows the standards/criteria laid out by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI).
Would Be a Plus If You Have
  • Early Childhood Education training
  • Deaf Adult Literacy Training
  • ASL/English Literacy experience
  • ASL Instructor experience or training
  • Deaf Interpreter Experience or Training
  • Linguistic/translation work
  • Community support/advocacy work

Compensation

Compensation is in accordance with the APSEA/NSGEU Collective Agreement.
Know the hourly range: $30.07 - $39.88 per hour.
