The position of the Occupational Therapist is responsible for conducting and interpreting a variety of assessments of occupational performance in order to articulate the factors (i.e. person, environment, occupation) that impact the referred individual’s functional performance in everyday activities. The Occupational Therapist provides consultation to individuals, families, and other support systems and develops recommendations for interventions targeted at enhancing the individual’s occupational performance. Interventions may be focused on the person, environment, or occupation factors, or a combination of these factors, in order to optimize function, independence, and satisfaction.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy and current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
- 5 years related experience
- Knowledge of the needs and best practice service standards for persons with developmental disabilities
- Well-developed support and interview skills to assist client facilitation
- Ability to contribute effectively within an interdisciplinary team
- Good interpersonal skills including the ability to build therapeutic rapport and trust
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to explain abstract concepts to clients and professionals of varied backgrounds and abilities
- Sound judgment, interpretive and analytical skills
- Detailed working knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of each of the assessments of occupational performance used
- Extensive experience conducting and interpreting assessments of occupational performance and generating assessment reports tailored to the client’s needs and goals
- CPI, CPR and First Aid would be an asset
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
Duties And Responsibilities
PROVIDES SERVICES TO CLIENTS LIVING MORE INDEPENDENTLY BY:
- Assist the client to participate in a more independent living arrangement by supporting their daily living requirements.
- Developing strategies for independent living in a home-based setting.
- Providing strategies for independence.
- Creating a continuous teaching and learning support structure that will engage the individual while providing them with skills to support greater independence.
- Assist individuals to use technology to support their living arrangements.
- Teach individuals to live in a safe environment.
- Participating in the implementation of instructional programs, consistent with the goals of individuals supported through the Community activities.
- Participating in the pursuit of opportunities for community inclusion and participation.
- Participating in the selection and/or preparation of various activities and learning.
- Transporting clients from home to the community supports, appointments, employment, etc.
Performs Assessments Of Occupational Performance By
- Using a client- and/or family-centered approach, choosing evaluations that are relevant to the occupational performance issues and goals identified by the individual/family.
- Conducting, interpreting and reporting the results of assessment in relation to identified goals.
- Works in conjunction with community partners, Special Needs Strategy, and Integrated Rehabilitation system processes in order to maximize DSLG services.
Provides Intervention Support By
- In collaboration with individuals/families, developing recommendations/interventions that facilitate goal attainment.
- Implementing interventions (individual or group) within a mediator model (i.e. providing teaching and training to individuals, parents, and support personnel to carry out the recommendations in natural contexts).
- Monitoring the impact of interventions and making modifications as needed to assist individuals/families in reaching their goals.
Provides Support To Clients By
- Developing therapeutic rapport with individuals and families and maintaining a client- and/or family-centered approach to clinical practice.
- Advocating for client and/or family rights.
- Fostering independence and skill development as well as self-efficacy, self-advocacy and improved quality of life.
Provides Administrative Support By
- Processes incoming referrals (internal and external) as well as waitlists in consultation with the manager.
- Developing individual case plans for clients accepted for service.
- Maintaining detailed and timely client records including assessment reports, progress notes, conference notes and discharge summaries.
- Maintaining client confidentiality.

- Operates in accordance with applicable Legislative, Ministry and professional association requirements of the position
- Is knowledgeable about, ensures others are knowledgeable about and complies with Quality Assurance Measures (QAM) guidelines as directed by the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services (MCCSS)
- Is knowledgeable about, ensures others are knowledgeable about and complies with the agency’s policies and procedures
- Operates, at all times, in a safe and secure manner
Health And Safety
- Ensure Health and Safety Program requirements are followed based on the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Ensure an awareness of safety measures for the agency, yourself and the individuals receiving services
- Ensure compliance with the agency’s mandatory training requirements
