Job description

The Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of duties associated with laboratory tests and analyses. Work can involve but is not limited to: registration and collection of blood samples (inpatient, outpatient, ER patients, and pediatric) and other specimens from patients, delivering specimens to the laboratory, sorting, recording, centrifuging, preparing samples for analysis, packaging specimens for transport to other testing locations, performing manual and automated tests, staining and cover-slipping of slides in various departments, dumping surgical specimens, plating microbiology specimens, and other lab-related duties.

Job Demands

By applying for this job, you acknowledge understanding that the regular requirements and demands include (but are not limited to):

  1. Occasionally lifting or moving supplies generally not exceeding 25 lbs, with occasional carrying, pushing, pulling, and lifting between 25-50 lbs.
  2. Constantly standing, walking, and bending or stretching into awkward positions during specimen collection procedures with patients.
  3. Consistently performing fine finger and precision work when using needles to extract specimens, palpating for veins, entering data into the computer, and preparing specimen labels.

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized program in Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistance is required.
  • Training or experience in basic laboratory techniques.
  • Current and ongoing certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is required.
  • A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
