Job summary

Six Nations of the Grand River is hiring a Maintenance Lead to supervise the maintenance team, manage facility operations, and ensure safety across Social Services buildings and grounds. The role requires 40 hours weekly with 8:00 am–4:30 pm scheduling flexibility.

The position reports to the Social Services Executive Administrator and offers a full-time career within the Administration, Social Services unit. Applicants must meet trade qualifications and hold a valid Ontario driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in a skilled trade or related experience with 2+ years in maintenance/custodial.
  • Proficient in spreadsheet and word programs; strong computer skills.
  • Valid Ontario G-class driver’s license with reliable vehicle.
  • Criminal record check completed; immunization current.
  • Training in WHMIS and health and safety; knowledge of security and fire alarm systems is an asset.
  • Hands-on knowledge in electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry and basic vehicle repair.
  • Ability to diagnose issues and propose practical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Maintenance Team and manage cleaning and general upkeep of buildings, equipment, grounds and facilities.
  • Plan, schedule, and inspect preventive maintenance; maintain records and reports.
  • Prepare contracts and coordinate outside contractors for facility and vehicle work.
  • Oversee safety, compliance, and immunization requirements; support health standards.
  • Assist with capital forecasts and daily administrative duties; evaluate staffing needs.
  • Provide event support, teamwork, and effective communication across shifts.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Community College Diploma in a skilled trade such as carpentry, HVAC, maintenance or building and grounds field with 2 years maintenance/custodial experience or Grade 12 Secondary School Education or GED with 5 years maintenance/custodial experience;
  • Computer skills: experience spreadsheet and word programs.
  • Must have a valid class G Ontario driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Must pass a criminal record check.
  • Certification in Health and Safety, WHMIS and heights training considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of security and fire alarm systems an asset.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking are key in this line of work to diagnose issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Basic understanding and skill in small engine repair, vehicle repair, electrical, painting, carpentry and plumbing.
  • Expertise in a variety of systems, equipment and tools to effectively complete some of the more complex projects.
  • Up to date immunization is required

POSITION TITLE: Maintenance Lead

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Social Services Executive Administrator.

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The Social Services Maintenance Lead is responsible for supervising the Maintenance Team who manage the cleaning and general maintenance of the buildings, equipment, grounds and facilities under the umbrella of the Social Services Administration Department.

The position requires full-time hours from 8 am to 4:30 pm or flexible as required to meet seasonal demands and staff coverage.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Technical Functions
  • Coordinates the Maintenance Team, plan, supervise, inspect and schedule preventive/predictive maintenance work to ensure reliability of all facility assets (mechanical, grounds, equipment, and vehicles).
  • Develop maintenance schedules using work order system, and monitor all information on building assets and vehicles.
  • Prepare reports as required to meet proper health and safety measures and occupational health and safety standards;
  • Assist with projecting facility needs for capital forecast.
  • Vehicle maintenance reports and service records.
  • Administrative Functions
  • Must take into consideration cost effectiveness of maintaining a schedule of repair.
  • Manage daily departmental administrative functions including preparation of work schedules for staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations when required.
  • Seek training for maintenance staff as appropriate.
  • Maintains documentation according to organization policies and professional standards.
  • Assist clients with lawn maintenance needs where identified and approved.
  • Prepare information for contracts to be used for the maintenance of equipment, vehicles, refrigeration, grounds maintenance, mechanical, electrical and HVAC in accordance with appropriate warranty. Oversee outside contractors performing facility and vehicle maintenance work. Maintain accurate records regarding equipment and servicing using maintenance logs and work orders.
  • Communications Functions
  • Supervise and develop the maintenance team to ensure effective communication between shifts and facilities. Build team work and promote adherence to specific facility policies to ensure consistent compliance with Health and Safety procedures at all facilities. Identify safety, productivity and quality issues which may arise.
  • Supports set up and tear down for events, activities as required; Must have good writing, documentation and computer skills;
  • Interaction with others must be clear and friendly;
  • Ability to manage daily tasks and long-term projects;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, create schedules and develop timelines for completing the work and organizing their time.
  • Other Functions
  • Provides leadership to the team to achieve results using safety, reliability, cost and quality.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Executive Administrator which includes, but is not limited to involvement with the Six Nations Community Emergency plan.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work involves a high degree of physical both indoors and outdoors, interaction with the public; subject to deadlines, interruptions and some unscheduled hours; flexibility of working hours; ability to take direction, prioritize and work independently.
  • May involve some travel in/outside of the community as required using own transportation and could include air travel.
  • Must respect the Privacy Act and adhere to confidentiality.
  • Must be in good physical health and up to date with immunization;
  • This job can be physically demanding, requiring workers to adjust heavy equipment, squeeze through tight spaces, climb tall ladders and carry heavy objects.

Represents and promotes Six Nations Council and the Social Services Department in a courteous, cooperative and professional manner. Works with staff/other Six Nations agencies with courtesy, cooperation and teamwork. Develops sound professional working relationships.
