Job summary

Niagara On The Lake Long Term Care Residence is hiring a Maintenance worker to perform routine upkeep, preventive maintenance and repairs throughout the home. You will assist skilled trades, supervise maintenance tasks and help ensure life-safety systems are functioning properly.

The role is casual with flexible hours; starting wage is $24.52/hour. Strong teamwork, communication with residents and staff, and adherence to safety and infection-control policies are essential.

Qualifications

  • Secondary school graduate or approved equivalent.
  • Experience in general maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to read, write and understand oral and written instructions.
  • Proficient in the use of a wide range of tools.
  • Ability to train, direct and supervise others
  • Ability to effectively communicate with residents and staff
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Good understanding of chemical and equipment use
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member
  • Evidence of being focused on people’s feelings when interacting and turning tasks into positive social interactions.
  • Must provide a complete and current Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one
  • TB testing results or chest X-ray as per Public Health requirements
  • Two supervisory references required
  • Provide proof of all required vaccines.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine maintenance, servicing and repair operations to maintain home, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and grounds in proper condition.
  • Schedules and supervises maintenance and repair work.
  • Observes and monitors all areas for maintenance requirements and carries out preventative maintenance.
  • Replaces light bulbs, repairs call bells, clears drains, repairs beds, chairs, tables, etc., paints and redecorates.
  • Provides general assistance to skilled tradespersons as required.
  • Notifies outside contractors for specialized work and monitors their work.
  • Conducts regular maintenance rounds to ensure life safety and building systems function properly.
  • Follows policies on safety, infection control, and QA.
  • Supervises fire prevention and drill procedures; liaises with Fire Departments.
  • Liaises with outside service contractors and inspectors for compliance.
  • Participates in budget preparation; orders supplies as per policy.
  • Maintains records and reports as required.
  • Keeps work area clean and safe; handles tools/supplies properly.
  • Notifies the Executive Director of significant malfunctions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The Maintenance person reports to the Environmental Services Manager and is expected to perform general, routine maintenance and servicing operations throughout the home in accordance with applicable codes and regulations.

Wage Rate:

The starting wage rate is $24.52/hour.

Vacancy:

We are hiring employees to work on a casual basis to help us fulfil our scheduling needs and fill vacant shifts as they arise. We are offering flexible hours.

Responsibilities:

  • As directed and in accordance with applicable codes and regulations, performs a variety of routine maintenance, servicing and repair operations to maintain home, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and grounds in proper condition.
  • Responsible for effectively scheduling and supervising maintenance and repair work.
  • Observes and monitors all areas of the home for ongoing maintenance requirements and carries out preventative maintenance programs as directed.
  • Performs typical work such as replacing light bulbs, repairing call bells, clearing drains, repairing beds, chairs, tables, etc., painting and redecorating tasks, replacing tiles, and removing garbage.
  • Provides general assistance to skilled tradespersons such as mechanics, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, painters, etc., as required.
  • Following approval refers problems requiring specialized work, such as electrical or plumbing, to outside contractors and monitors work performed.
  • Conducts regular maintenance rounds to ensure all life safety and building and support systems are functioning properly.
  • Adheres to established policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control.
  • Supervises fire prevention and fire drill procedures, including staff training in proper procedures and use of firefighting equipment. Liaises with local municipal Fire Departments.
  • Liaises with outside service contractors and inspectors to ensure equipment and environment conform with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Participates in budget preparation and control. Orders and/or purchases supplies/equipment in accordance with established purchasing policies and budgetary constraints.
  • Maintains required records, reports, statistics, etc., in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
  • Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe manner and assures proper care in the use of tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Notifies the Executive Director of significant building/equipment malfunctions/problems.
  • Other duties as assigned and or indicated in the Job Task Inventory

Qualifications:

The qualifications needed to join our family are as follows:

  • Secondary school graduate or approved equivalent.
  • Experience in general maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to read, write and understand oral and written instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing and carpentry; ability to read and interpret manuals related to equipment and systems.
  • Ability to evaluate and determine when the services of skilled tradespeople are necessary. Proficient in the use of a wide range of tools.
  • Ability to train, direct and supervise others
  • Ability to effectively communicate with residents and staff
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Good understanding of chemical and equipment use
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member
  • To show evidence of being focused on people’s feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
  • To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals’ rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.
  • Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one
  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray (within the last year), as per Public Health requirements
  • Two supervisory references required
  • Provide proof of all required vaccines.The Employer strongly recommends to “stay up to date” with the recommended vaccines. Vaccination requirements are subject to changes as determined by the Employer.
