Job description

St. Thomas More Collegiate, a progressive coeducational Catholic high school in Burnaby, B.C., affiliated with the Blessed Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, is seeking a secondary school educator to join our Humanities department. The successful candidate will collaborate within our Humanities team to foster positive growth and development among students. This full-time position involves teaching various Humanities courses (English and Social Studies) from grades 8 to 10, with specific courses assigned based on departmental needs and the candidate's experience.

Our Social Studies program covers history, geography, culture, economics, law, government, social organization, and current issues and events. Students learn about their responsibilities within various communities—from local to global levels.

Our English courses aim to develop students' imagination, analytical skills, writing, and citizenship. We encourage exploration of literature through personal experience, fostering rhetorical skills and confident speaking abilities.

Preference will be given to applicants with prior secondary teaching experience across Humanities subjects and a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

Applicants must be or intend to become members of the British Columbia College of Teachers or hold a BC Independent School Teachers Certificate. Applications should include a cover letter, resume, and two referees' contact information. Interviews will begin immediately, and the posting remains open until the position is filled.

Questions about the position can be directed to Principal Mr. Joe Adams.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A valid BC Teaching Certificate or permission letter
  • An undergraduate degree in History, English, or a related field, or a Bachelor's in Education with a Humanities focus
  • Familiarity with BC Social Studies and English curricula and proficiency scales
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
