We are looking for a full-time, remote Senior Software Engineer with 5+ years of development experience and deep WordPress expertise to design, build, and maintain scalable, high-quality web applications and platforms. The role focuses on advanced WordPress development, including custom plugin development, hooks/APIs, and database optimization, while leveraging modern PHP and JavaScript practices.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for solving complex engineering problems, improving performance and architecture, and ensuring that all code meets defined quality standards. Working closely with product, UX, and front-end teams, translating designs into performant, accessible, and secure user experiences while integrating WordPress with external systems, databases, and services.

As a senior engineer, you will serve as a subject‑matter expert in WordPress and modern web technologies, enforce development standards, and mentor junior engineers on WordPress best practices, scalable architecture, and maintainable code design.

Our client provides integrated software and marketing solutions for the hospitality industry, specializing in short‑term rental management. Their platform provides vacation rental companies with an enterprise‑class Property Management System that integrates booking, guest communications, and financial reporting, all built with partner organization integrations in mind.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain custom WordPress plugins using WordPress hooks, APIs, and database architecture
• Implement and extend WordPress functionality while ensuring performance, security, and scalability
• Develop server‑side functionality using PHP and modern PHP frameworks/libraries such as Zend Framework, Laminas, Laravel, Symfony, and Doctrine
• Collaborate on front‑end development using JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, and frameworks such as React and/or Angular
• Design and implement scalable application architectures, including lar‑specific architecture and scalability considerations
• Experience writing and maintaining unit tests for PHP and WordPress‑based applications, including automated test suites, coverage thresholds, and CI/CD integration.
• Ensure accessibility standards, security best practices, and compliance across applications
• Implement secure user authentication and authorization across multiple systems, servers, and environments
• Design, query, and optimize SQL and NoSQL databases in support of WordPress‑driven applications

Required Experience

• Excellent English communication skills
• Experience in WordPress plug‑in development, WordPress hooks/APIs, WordPress Databases
• Strong knowledge of PHP web frameworks/libraries (e.g., Zend Framework, Laminas, Laravel, Symfony, Doctrine)
• Strong understanding of software design patterns and architectural principles (including MVC), front‑end technologies (e.g., JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, LAR), accessibility and security compliance, scalable application design and deployment, and authentication and authorization across distributed systems and environments.
• Familiarity with SQL/NoSQL databases and their declarative query pages with relation to WordPress
• Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git, GitHub
• Trustworthy, team‑oriented, and transparent

Desired Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or some technical engineering
• Familiarity with static analysis, code quality, and testing tools used to enforce coding standards, architectural rules, and test coverage (e.g., PHP static analysis, linting, and coverage reporting tools)
• Experience with Nginx or Apache
• Experience with AWS or other cloud providers
• Knowledge of AI toolsets and toolkits
• Experience with JavaScript/React in relation to Gutenberg
