Job Description
Parsons is seeking an experienced MBSE Lead Engineer to drive architecture, requirements, safety, and verification models across the National Airspace System (NAS) for the FAA’s Brand New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS). In this role, you will lead a team of MBSE engineers across BNATCS workstreams, including Communication, Surveillance, Automation, and Facilities (Building Information Modeling). You will own the SysML model, establish the digital thread to requirements and test, and develop compliance strategies and artifacts to support FAA certification for safety‑critical systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead a team of MBSE engineers across BNATCS workstreams, including Communication, Surveillance, Automation, and Facilities (BIM). Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and oversight to ensure consistent modeling quality and traceability across all workstreams.
- Define modeling approaches, viewpoints, governance, metrics, and own the SysML model baseline and releases.
- Architect system solutions and decompose requirements in SysML (block, activity, sequence, state, parametric) with clear interfaces (ICDs) and allocation to software, hardware, and operations.
- Establish the digital thread by integrating models with requirements tools (e.g., DOORS), issue tracking systems (e.g., JIRA), test repositories, and configuration management tools.
- Work across BNATCS workstreams to perform safety analyses (FHA, PSSA, FTA/CCF/CCA, FMEA) and maintain traceability from hazards to requirements, verification, and certification findings.
- Plan and execute model‑based test design, simulation/analysis, coverage/traceability, and acceptance criteria tied to requirements and hazards.
- Lead performance, reliability, maintainability, and cybersecurity considerations within the system model.
- Interface with FAA and industry stakeholders; present models and compliance evidence at reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR).
- Enhance MBSE workflows through modeling patterns, libraries, scripts/automation, and CI pipelines for model quality checks.
Required Skills
- BS in Systems/Aerospace/Electrical/Computer Engineering (or related); MS preferred.
- 15+ years of overall experience. 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, including 5+ years leading MBSE on safety‑critical programs.
- US Persons required.
- Demonstrated delivery on at least one FAA regulated program (airborne and/or NAS ground).
- Proficiency with SysML and at least one of: Cameo Systems Modeler/MagicDraw, IBM Rhapsody, Capella, or Enterprise Architect.
- Hands on integration of models with requirements management (DOORS/DOORS Next/Jama/Polarion) and configuration management/CI (GitLab/GitHub/Jenkins/Teamwork Cloud).
- Strong knowledge of ARP4754A/ARP4761 and either DO 178C/DO 254 (airborne) or DO 278A (NAS ground).
- Experience producing and defending certification artifacts and compliance evidence.
- Understanding of certification strategies:
- For airborne systems: ARP4754A/ARP4761 flow down to DO 178C (PSAC, plans/standards, compliance matrix), DO 254 (PHAC, plans/standards), DO 330 (tool qualification), DO 331 (model‑based development), and DO 160 (environmental).
- For NAS ground systems: DO 278A processes, assurance levels, plans/standards, and compliance data.
Desired Skills
- Experience with DO 330 (tool qualification), DO 331 (model based development & verification), and DO 160 (environmental).
- Safety analysis tooling (e.g., FTA/FMEA tools) and/or STPA experience.
- Modeling automation (e.g., Java/Groovy for Cameo, Python for model/report generation); OSLC, OpenMBEE, or ModelCenter pipelines.
- Exposure to airworthiness security processes (e.g., applying security risk assessments and mitigations in the system model).
- Experience with IV&V, model‑based testing, simulation (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink), and performance modeling.
- Knowledge of TSO/STC pathways and working with DER/ODA and multi‑authority projects (FAA/EASA).
- Proficiency with Cameo Systems Modeler (MagicDraw) [+ Teamwork Cloud], DOORS/DOORS Next or Jama, Git/GitLab, Jira/Confluence, ModelCenter/OpenMBEE [as applicable], MATLAB/Simulink [as applicable], and safety analysis tools.
Preferred Certifications
- INCOSE CSEP/ESEP, OMG certifications (OCUP/OCSMP), or PMI/SAFe credentials.
