Job Overview

The British School, Rio de Janeiro (Urca Campus) is a non-selective, non-denominational international school serving students from age 2 to 18. The Secondary section follows a UK Key Stage 3 curriculum, IGCSEs at Key Stage 4 and the IB Diploma at Key Stage 5. The campus has approximately 500 students, the majority of whom are Brazilian families with a small number of expatriate children. Results in English are consistently above world averages.

Key Responsibilities
  • Head the English department, providing vision, motive and challenge for colleagues.
  • Develop and deliver a high-quality, IB and IGCSE curriculum at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5.
  • Implement a range of assessment and feedback mechanisms, including Accelerated Reader programmes and IGCSE/IB assessment frameworks.
  • Lead teacher professional development and facilitate schoolwide pedagogic initiatives.
  • Provide efficient and effective departmental management and administration.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Well-qualified and ambitious teacher with experience in high-performing international contexts.
  • Experience of IGCSE and IB curricula, curriculum development and assessment design.
  • Strong classroom practice and evidence of real impact on learning outcomes.
  • Leadership and management experience in an English department.
