About the Role
Fraud Deflect is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead multiple engineering teams and strengthen how we deliver software.
This is a hands-on leadership role combining people management, technical leadership, and delivery ownership. You will manage and develop engineers, guide architecture and engineering decisions, and ensure teams consistently deliver stable, secure, and maintainable systems. In this role, you must remain technically credible and be willing to review designs and code, troubleshoot critical issues, build prototypes, and directly unblock teams when necessary.
This role reports to the Director of Engineering and will work directly with a Technical Project Manager.
What You Will Do
- Lead multiple engineering teams and establish clear ownership, priorities, and expectations.
- Manage engineers through regular one-on-ones, coaching, feedback, performance management, and career development.
- Partner with Client Experience, Product, Sales, Operations, and company leadership to turn business priorities into executable technical plans.
- Own delivery across concurrent projects, including scope, dependencies, risks, timelines, and release readiness.
- Ensure blockers and delivery risks are identified and escalated early rather than after deadlines are missed.
- Guide architecture, system design, technical tradeoffs, and implementation strategy.
- Review technical designs and critical pull requests while maintaining appropriate engineering standards.
- Remain selectively hands-on through prototypes, complex debugging, production incidents, and high-risk technical work.
- Improve software quality through practical testing, code review, documentation, observability, incident management, and release processes.
- Maintain accountability for system reliability, security, operational readiness, and incident follow-up.
- Improve engineering execution through better planning, ticket quality, estimation, ownership, and project visibility.
- Help hire, onboard, retain, and develop high-performing engineers and technical leaders.
- Build processes that support rapid delivery without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
What We Are Looking For
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- 6+ years of experience managing or formally leading software engineers.
- Experience leading multiple teams, workstreams, or complex cross-functional initiatives.
- Strong understanding of backend systems, APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, and distributed system design.
- Experience making architecture decisions and evaluating technical tradeoffs.
- Strong understanding of automated testing, code review, production reliability, security, and incident management.
- Ability to evaluate technical work without needing to personally implement every solution.
- Demonstrated ability to coach engineers, provide direct feedback, and address performance problems.
- Strong project execution skills with a record of delivering complex software initiatives.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment where priorities and constraints may change.
- Clear written and verbal communication with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
- Willingness to challenge unclear requirements, unrealistic timelines, and weak technical decisions.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Python-based backend systems and service-oriented architectures.
- Experience with SQL, data pipelines, and high-volume transactional systems.
- Experience with AWS, FastAPI, MySQL, ClickHouse, Airflow, and Linux environments.
- Experience managing remote or internationally distributed engineering teams.
- Experience in fintech, payments, fraud prevention, chargebacks, disputes, or merchant services.
- Experience improving engineering processes in a rapidly growing organization.
