The Role
The Front End Developer Lead will build and modify responsive web pages using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related technologies based on visual briefs. The role includes localising pages, ensuring code quality, and leading a small team of developers. You will collaborate closely with QA and PM leads to scope, estimate, and deliver projects with minimal errors, and stay current on emerging front‑end innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Train and mentor the development team
- Liaise with QA and PM teams to update on progress and drive delivery to the highest standard
- Develop new digital assets as identified by supervisors and management
- Modify existing code to accommodate locale‑specific requirements (change image paths, server‑side includes, file names, directories, etc.)
- Ensure all work aligns with client briefs and minimum requirements
- Develop fast and efficiently to meet tight deadlines
- Produce digital assets in several languages
- Update and amend existing assets
- Maintain client digital assets using clean, accessible markup according to latest web standards
- Advise project managers on client digital requests
- Monitor latest trends to boost development efficiencies
- Build solutions that leverage mobile platform features while remaining performant on the latest devices
- Plan projects and resources
- Translate technical briefs into actionable tasks for the team
- Interview and train new hires
- Share best practices with other Lead Developers across markets
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of commercial development experience within an agency
- Experience leading teams of developers and overseeing successful web projects
- BA degree in computer science, MIS, or related field with knowledge of data structures and algorithms
- Fluency in English and another native language, written and oral
- Experience creating technical and functional specifications
- Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and organised
- Strong Subversion (command-line) skills
- Strong understanding of branch management, continuous integration, and agile practices
- Experience with JIRA and breaking down tasks into tickets
- Experience establishing code standards and best practices within teams
- Expertise in front‑end pre‑processing (Sass, Browserify)
- Proficiency with HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, JavaScript/JQuery and build tools (Grunt, Gulp)
- Good debugging skills in JavaScript
- Experience with localization processes
- Responsive development experience
- Experience with front‑end frameworks (Bootstrap, Foundation)
- Image manipulation skills (Photoshop, Fireworks) and ability to slice elements from PSDs
- Accessible and SEO‑based coding
- Self‑starter comfortable hand‑coding front‑end, not relying on WYSIWYG tools
- Clear understanding of usability principles
- Proficiency in developing to W3C standards
- Knowledge of challenges in email newsletter builds
- Progressive enhancement and graceful degradation
- Experience with Bash scripting
- Experience optimizing for mobile devices and familiarity with responsive/adaptive methods
