Job summary

SVITZER is seeking a Chief Engineer to manage on-board tug maintenance in Bahrain, ensuring compliance with planned schedules and budgets. The role includes supervising engineering personnel, maintaining logs, and supporting safety and environmental standards.

You'll lead maintenance activities, coordinate with the Master, and drive operational improvements while ensuring regulatory compliance and proper training for crew.

Qualifications

• Chief Engineer qualification (III/3) required.
• STCW certifications including basic safety, advanced fire fighting and survival craft.
• Medical fitness evidenced by Valid Seafarer Medical.
• Experience leading maintenance teams and managing on-board budgets.

Responsibilities

• Reports to the Master as Chief Engineer.
• Executes on-board tug maintenance per schedule and budget.
• Maintains and repairs marine plant and equipment.
• Supervises engineering personnel; signs off on completed maintenance.
• Prepares maintenance and operational reports.
• Participates in safety training and trains other crew.
• Assists other engineers as required.
• Monitors and reviews OH&S standards; reports findings.
• Ensures daily compliance with environmental regulations.
• Engages in improvement exercises and liaises with management on procedures for continuous improvement.
• Maintains machinery, safety, and environmental equipment; keeps Engine Logbook and ORO.
• Complies with legislation; handles bunkering and internal oil transfers.
• Follows company safety management regulations as required.
• Performs vessel tasks including mooring and towline handling.
• Conducts induction for visitors and authorized personnel when needed.

Job description

• The Chief Engineer reports to the Master.
• Responsible for executing tug maintenance on board in accordance with the planned maintenance schedule and budget
• Maintenance and repair of marine plant and equipment;
• Supervision of personnel undertaking and assisting in the engineering function; Signing off on maintenance work completed;
• Preparation of maintenance and operational reports as required;
• Participation in safety training, including the training of other crew members;
• Assisting other engineers as required;
• Monitoring and review of relevant occupational health and safety standards and procedures and reporting as appropriate;
• Ensuring day to day compliance with relevant environmental regulations;
• Participation in operational improvement exercises and liaison with SVITZER management regarding improved operational procedures, leading to a culture of continuous improvement
• Daily correct use and maintenance of all machinery, safety and environment protection equipment The correct keeping of Engine Logbook and Oil Record Book (when applicable)
• Comply with local, regional, national and international legislation. Responsible for all bunker and internal oil transfers according to Bunkering of Fuel and Oils and Internal Transfer of Bunkers or Oil Products
• Comply with the regulations of the company safety management system. Where required through local working arrangements;
• To perform operational duties, as required and directed, related to all tasks of the vessel including mooring/unmooring and tow line connection/disconnection.
• Induction training of visitors, employees and other persons authorized by SVITZER to access the vessel where a Master or Deck Officer is unavailable.
