Job summary

SVITZER, a leading marine towage company, is seeking an Engine Rating to support the Chief Engineer aboard our vessel fleet. You will help keep engines running, assist in maintenance, and ensure safe, ready operations in line with HMS policies and local regulations.

The role requires basic safety training, sea time as an oiler, and English language understanding. You will join a diverse crew and contribute to safe, efficient operations in Bahrain waters.

Qualifications

  • English language skills and safety awareness are required.
  • STCW certifications and medical fitness are essential.
  • Seagoing experience and watchkeeping background are preferred.
  • III/4 Eng Watch Rating qualification is recognized.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Chief Engineer.
  • Keeps vessel engines and systems available for deployment.
  • Performs maintenance and housekeeping tasks as instructed.
  • Participates in safety drills and training onboard.
  • Follows HMS policies and local regulations for safety and operations.
  • Stops work if unsafe and reports to the Master with Take 5 procedures.
  • Contributes to proactive near-miss reporting and safety culture.
  • Induction and safety briefings for visitors and crew are conducted as required.

Key Areas Of Responsibility
  • The Engine Rating reports to the Chief Engineer.
  • The Engine Rating contributes so the vessel is always available to be deployed in a safe and efficient manner, as directed by the Chief Engineer and always in accordance with HMS policies/procedures and according to local legislation when applicable.
  • To perform all work tasks safely and if in doubt before the work start ask the Chief Engineer for guidance
  • Propose initiatives for raising the onboard safety level
  • Active participation in safety training like drills onboard
  • To perform duties assigned by the Chief Engineer related to all tasks on the vessel.
  • To perform maintenance and housekeeping duties on deck, in the engine room or accommodation as instructed by the Chief Engineer.
  • The Engine Rating has the obligation to Stop Work whenever a task is unsafe (by personal judgement) and then inform the Master. Deck Hands must know the procedure Stop Work that also include the `Take 5`. `Stop Work` and `Take 5` is simplest measures Svitzer have for crew to prevent personal injuries. Master is responsible for instruction.
  • The Engine Rating must know the procedure Proactive and Near Miss Reporting for the various type of occurrences that should be reported to the Chief Engineer or Master with the potential to cause injury, illness, pollution, defects or damage. Chief Engineer is responsible for instruction.
  • Comply with the regulations of the company safety management system.
  • Induction training of visitors, employees and other persons authorized by SVITZER to access the vessel where a Master, Deck Officer or Chief Engineer/Engineer or Deck Rating is unavailable.
Knowledge and Qualifications
  • III/4 - Eng Watch Rating - Unlimited
  • Basic Safety Training (STCW A-VI/1)
  • Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties A-VI/6
  • Valid Seafarer Medical
Training/Special Skills Required
  • Understanding of English language preferred.
  • At least 24 months of Sea time as an Oiler
