Job summary

SVITZER is looking for a Deck Hand to support vessel operations under the Master's supervision. You will help keep the vessel ready for deployment and assist with deck and engine room tasks, always prioritizing safety and compliance with HMS procedures.

Key requirements include Basic Safety Training and a valid seafarer medical certificate, plus willingness to participate in drills and safety initiatives aboard.

Qualifications

  • Nav watch rating at level II/4 or higher is required.
  • Basic safety training per STCW A-VI/1 is required.
  • Security training for designated duties is required.
  • Valid seafarer medical certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • The Deck Hand reports to the Master.
  • Contributes to keeping the vessel available for deployment safely.
  • Perform all work tasks safely and consult Master if in doubt.
  • Propose initiatives to raise onboard safety levels.
  • Participate in onboard safety drills and training.
  • Perform deck, engine room or accommodation tasks as instructed.
  • Stand watches as required and stop unsafe work per procedure.
  • Assist with salvage jobs and shore-based equipment prep as needed.
  • Take part in proactive near-miss reporting and HMS compliance.
  • Induction training for visitors and authorized personnel.

  • The Deck Hand reports to the Master
  • The Deck Hand contributes so the vessel is always available to be deployed in a safe and efficient manner, as directed by the Master and always in accordance with HMS policies/procedures and according to local legislation when applicable.
  • To perform all work tasks safely and if in doubt before the work start ask the Master for guidance
  • Propose initiatives for raising the onboard safety level
  • Active participation in safety training like drills onboard
  • To perform operational duties, related to all tasks of the vessel including assisting with salvage jobs, workshop jobs ashore or with preparing equipment on shore/tow not limited to.
  • To perform maintenance and housekeeping duties on deck, in the engine room or accommodation as instructed by the Master
  • Stand watches such as lookout on the bridge and on deck as required
  • The Deck Hand has the obligation to Stop Work whenever a task is unsafe (by personal judgement) and then inform the Master. Deck Hands must know the procedure Stop Work that also include the `Take 5`. `Stop Work` and `Take 5` is simplest measures Svitzer have for crew to prevent personal injuries. Master is responsible for instruction.
  • The Deck Hand must know the procedure Proactive and Near Miss Reporting for the various type of occurrences that should be reported to the Master with the potential to cause injury, illness, pollution, defects or damage. Master is responsible for instruction.
  • Comply with the regulations of the company safety management system.
  • Induction training of visitors, employees and other persons authorized by SVITZER to access the vessel where a Master, Deck Officer or Chief Engineer/Engineer is unavailable.
