Hydro is seeking a Welding Engineer to support development, qualification, and execution of welding activities for structural components in rail applications. You will work with MIG, TIG, and FSW processes, ensure compliance with EN 15085 and ISO 3834, and guide automotive and rail projects across European sites.

Strong collaboration and problem-solving are essential. The role involves on-site support, root cause analyses, and defining testing plans while maintaining a high standard of quality

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or Materials Science or related field.
  • Certified Welding Engineer qualification (IWE/EWE) is required.
  • Strong hands-on welding experience (MIG, TIG, FSW) in rail or aluminium environments.
  • Knowledge of EN 15085 and ISO 3834 standards and quality requirements.
  • Understanding of aluminium 6xxx alloys and manufacturing processes.
  • Structured problem-solving mindset with analytical skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and work independently.
  • Fluent English; German or French is an advantage.

Responsabilités

  • Support welding feasibility assessments during RFQs and projects.
  • Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and qualifications.
  • Define and optimize welding parameters with production teams.
  • Ensure compliance with EN 15085 and ISO 3834 and customer requirements.
  • Provide on-site technical support and troubleshoot welding issues.
  • Lead root cause analyses for defects and drive continuous improvement.
  • Define inspection and testing plans and support audits and certifications.
  • Advise production sites on welding technologies and industrialization.

Role Purpose

The role is responsible for supporting the development, qualification, and execution of welding activities for structural components in railway applications (MIG, TIG, FSW). It combines deep technical welding expertise with strong knowledge of standards, materials, and quality requirements specific to the rail sector. This role plays a key part in ensuring compliance with key railway standards such as EN 15085, and ISO 3834 and ensures compliance with other quality standards, HSE regulations, and customer requirements.

In addition, the role supports the Automotive Sector in the selection of appropriate technologies, cost evaluation, and serial equipment planning, while also guiding, advising, and challenging the production sites.

What You Will Be Doing

What Will Make You Successful
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Materials Science, or related field
  • Certified Welding Engineer qualification (IWE/EWE)
  • Strong hands‑on experience in welding (MIG, TIG, FSW), ideally in rail or aluminium environments
  • Knowledge of railway welding standards and quality requirements
  • Understanding of aluminium materials (especially 6xxx alloys) and manufacturing processes
  • Strong analytical skills and a structured, problem‑solving mindset
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across teams and functions
  • Fluent English (German/French is an advantage)
