Huawei Technologies Research and Development Belgium NV, a centre of excellence for silicon photonics, seeks an experienced Photonics Design Engineer to lead the development of high-speed modulators. You will explore new concepts, materials and layouts to advance 400G+ transmission.

You will work within the Caliopa department in Gent, collaborating with process, test and module teams to deliver innovative photonic solutions for AI-enabled optical communications.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of integrated optics and silicon photonics.
• PhD/MS in photonics, physics or EE with relevant hands-on experience.
• Experience in design and testing of photonic components and modulators.

Responsabilités

• Develop Huawei’s silicon photonics platform as part of a design team.
• Introduce high-speed modulator concepts including RF lines and opto-electronic design.
• Evaluate modulators topologies such as MZI and micro-ring devices; interface with process teams.
• Explore new materials systems to push performance toward 400G+.
• Design and validate photonic components, subsystems and circuits.
• Define test plans and analyse experimental data in R&D.
• Collaborate with component, module and test teams.

Huawei Technologies Research and Development Belgium NV is a centre of excellence for silicon photonics. Driven by AI applications, silicon photonics technology is playing an important role in current and next generation optical communication. Caliopa department, which is located in Gent, is the core team providing advanced silicon photonic chip solutions and novel design methods to enhance the competitiveness of the opto-electronics business in Huawei.

To strengthen our team, we are now looking for an experienced Photonics Design Engineer to lead the development of high-speed modulators, exploring new concepts and materials.

Job responsibilities

• Work as part of a team of photonic design engineers dedicated to develop Huawei’s silicon photonics platform
• Introduce new high-speed modulator concepts, including the opto-electronic design as well as the design of the RF lines
• Evaluate different modulator topologies, including micro-ring modulators and Mach Zehnder modulators
• Introduce new material systems to the existing mass manufacturing platforms to push the performance towards 400G+
• Interface with process teams to enhance or replace existing process modules of high-speed modulators
• Design and validate photonic components, subsystems and circuits
• Define test plans and analyze experimental data in R&D phase
• Work closely with component/module teams
• Work closely with the test team

Requirements & Qualifications

• In depth knowledge of integrated optics
• Education requirements,
  • PHD. in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field having + 3 years of work experience
  • M.S. in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field having + 6 years of work experience
• Experience requirements
  • Design and test of photonic components in silicon photonics or III/V materials
  • Track record of successful (project) management of high-speed modulator development
  • Hands-on experience with photonics modelling tools (Lumerical, Photon design, COMSOL, …)
  • Hands-on experience with RF modelling tools
  • Hands-on experience with process modelling tools
  • General knowledge of silicon photonics devices and process flow
  • Hands-on experience with layout tools (e.g. Luceda Ipkiss)
  • Hands-on experience with the RF characterization of high-speed components would be an advantage
  • Experience with Python would be an advantage
  • Experience with Linux would be an advantage
