Royal Military Academy in Brussels seeks a full-time researcher to work within the Department of Weapon Systems and Ballistics on the RAPTOR project. You will conduct university-level scientific research on weapon systems, focusing on AI-enabled fire control and target designation in response to drone threats.

The role involves fragmentation modelling, data fusion, and experimental firing campaigns, with collaboration across industrial and academic partners.

Qualifications

  • Academic or professional experience in numerical modelling and simulation of mechanical, aerodynamic or ballistic problems.
  • Academic or professional experience in experimental test campaigns and data acquisition.
  • Proficiency in producing technical/scientific documents.
  • Training or experience in ballistics, weapon systems or fragmentation modelling.
  • Training or experience with drones, C-UAS systems or weapon systems performance.
  • Training or experience with Split-X and/or Python.
  • Training or experience in artificial intelligence.

Responsabilités

  • Model representative C-UAS operational scenarios based on open literature data, focusing on neutralisation.
  • Analyse vulnerability and survivability of drone targets component by component.
  • Perform fragmentation simulations and calibrate models against experiments.
  • Contribute to quantification of aerodynamic coefficients for models used in fragmentation and ballistic trajectory.
  • Quantify collateral damage and assess risk in engagement planning.
  • Assist in test application documentation, firing campaigns, data acquisition, and post-processing reports.
  • Validate simulations by comparing with experimental results on test ranges and in literature.
