Job Description: Technical Safety Engineer — ATLAS Project Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine | Global Engineering & Technology | Geel, Belgium

Help shape the future of safe pharmaceutical manufacturing. Join Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine in Geel as a Technical Safety Engineer and take a leading role in ATLAS, a strategic capacity expansion that will prepare our site for future patient needs. At our Geel site—our supply chain’s largest chemical production site for synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients—you will work where engineering excellence directly supports the reliable delivery of lifesaving medicines. Geel also has a “launch & grow” mission for new pharmaceutical products, creating an environment where new technology, strong partnerships and a practical can-do mindset come together. This is a highly visible, high-impact opportunity to influence the safety of major new installations from design through delivery—while growing your expertise alongside an experienced technical safety team.

Your opportunity Are you a hands‑on engineer who enjoys turning complex safety requirements into practical, compliant solutions? In this role, you will connect project teams, external engineering partners and site experts to ensure that technical safety is embedded in every phase of the ATLAS project.

About ATLAS and your role

As Technical Safety Engineer, you will be the central contact for all technical safety topics within ATLAS. You will guide an external engineering company and collaborate with internal engineers to ensure that applicable requirements are understood, translated into design decisions and implemented effectively. ATLAS is a strategic capacity expansion at the Geel site. It includes the replacement and expansion of reactors; the installation of centrifuges, dryers and filter dryers; and the utility and infrastructure modifications needed within existing production buildings. The new multipurpose installations will increase operational flexibility, support future demand and meet evolving compliance expectations. You do not need to be the deepest expert in every discipline from day one. What matters is your ability to take ownership, ask the right questions, bring specialists together and steer the project toward safe, robust and compliant solutions.

Your scope will include

functional safety, emergency relief device calculations, ATEX and the Explosion Protection Document (EPD), Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) compliance, machine safety, process safety calculations, inertisation and static electricity.

What you will do

Serve as the single point of contact for Global Engineering & Technology technical safety within the ATLAS project. Translate technical safety standards and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable expectations for design and execution teams. Guide and challenge external engineering partners, while aligning maintenance, engineering, operations and EHS stakeholders. Own and strengthen technical safety knowledge for the project, providing informed advice and coordinating specialist input where needed. Identify risks and improvement opportunities early, initiate the right actions and support engineering projects through completion. Contribute to the Geel GET Technical Safety team and the site Process Safety Management core team.

What you bring

A master’s degree in engineering, ideally in chemical engineering, process engineering or process safety. We would value a candidate who combines sound engineering judgement with curiosity, ownership and strong collaboration skills.

  • A strong commitment to technical safety, supported by relevant experience in the pharmaceutical, chemical or process industry.
  • The confidence to make well-reasoned decisions on technical safety topics and clearly explain the rationale.
  • The ability to see the bigger picture while maintaining attention to critical engineering details.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and developing innovative, practical safety solutions.
  • Clear communication and the ability to influence multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to learn across technical safety disciplines.
Why join us?

Meaningful impact: Your decisions will help protect people, assets and the reliable supply of medicines to patients. Growth and learning: Build broad technical safety expertise through training, on-the-job development and collaboration with experienced specialists. Visible project ownership: Influence a major site investment and help shape multipurpose installations designed for the future. A workplace where you can thrive: Join an inclusive, collaborative environment that values diverse perspectives, continuous learning and mutual respect.

Make your next move matter. At Johnson & Johnson, safety, quality and integrity are non-negotiable. We pair these values with open communication, teamwork and a can-do mindset. If you are ready to use your engineering expertise on a project with lasting impact—for colleagues, the Geel site and patients worldwide—we would like to hear from you.

Benefits:

  • We also offer service anniversary and recognition awards, and subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees - and in some location’s eligible dependents - can participate in several insurance plans.
