A major energy transition organization is seeking a motivated Policy Advisor in Brussels to support their policy team. Responsibilities include monitoring EU legislation, leading meetings on land use and permitting, and contributing to policy deliverables. SolarPower Europe is a member-led association representing the European solar PV sector. SolarPower Europe’s aim is to ensure that more energy is generated by solar than any other energy source by 2030 and lead our members to make solar the core of a smart, sustainable and inclusive energy system. We are an award-winning association and have over 300 members spanning 35 countries. We aim to produce thought‑leading energy market analysis and support the business of our members through creative and successful advocacy campaigns.

Background on Land Use & Permitting Workstream

The Land Use & Permitting Workstream works at overcoming bottlenecks on land deployment and permitting of solar projects. Reaching the REPowerEU objectives will require deploying, at fast pace, additional large‑scale solar PV projects on the ground. Procedures are often overly bureaucratic, lacking digitisation and result in a high burden for project developers. If well planned and well designed, however, these projects can also unlock benefits for local communities and consumers. This can also help to minimise impacts on biodiversity and the environment, and even contribute to nature restoration. Promoting innovative solar solutions that allow for dual use of land and positive social and environmental benefits will be key.

As part of the Workstream activities, we monitor the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive by assessing and providing an overview of the current state of play across Member States. Our aim is also to promote innovative and integrated PV solutions, such as agrisolar, nature‑inclusive PV and floating PV.

Job responsibilities

Reporting to the deputy CEO at SolarPower Europe, the policy advisor will support the work of the policy team. The responsibilities of the position include the following:

• Monitoring all relevant EU legislation on renewables and storage permitting, including the Renewable Energy Directive;
• Lead the workstream meetings on Land‑Use & Permitting, developing position papers and advocacy outreach with and for the members;
• Building, maintaining, and expanding a strong network in the field of land‑use and permitting in Brussels and among SolarPower Europe’s members;
• Contributing to the content and drafting of SolarPower Europe’s deliverables (presentations, reports);
• Occasional travel to destinations in the European Union (average once per quarter);
• Occasional public speaking at conferences in Brussels or EU capitals (average once per quarter);
• Other ad hoc tasks as required, such as preparing briefing notes and presentations; providing organisational and logistical support to events, and supporting administrative and business operations functions in the supply chains team;

Profile

The ideal candidate has:

• A master‑level degree in a relevant discipline: Energy Technology, Engineering, Economics, Environmental Science, Political Science, Renewable Energy or similar;
• A passion for the energy transition and solar energy;
• Some technical knowledge about renewable energy technology, EU policy, and regulation;
• A diligent, reliable and result‑oriented attitude;
• Strong organisational skills and ability to meet tight deadlines;
• Demonstrated project management and coordination skills;
• Strong English writing skills and attention to detail;
• An excellent customer‑focused approach;
• Good networking and interpersonal skills;
• Confidence in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
• Proficiency in English. Fluency in any other language including French, Spanish, or German is an asset;
• Experience of supporting event organisation is a plus;
• Experience of working with various cultures would be an advantage;
• At least 2 years of relevant experience in EU policy advocacy;
