KU Leuven invites applications for a PhD position in the SySi Team focusing on integrated steam system design and control in a multi-energy vector context. The PhD combines physics-based MPC with co-design concepts for optimal sizing, leveraging collaboration with EnergyVille and industry partners.

The role requires a Master of Science in Engineering, strong programming in C/C++, Python and Modelica, and a passion for energy systems, optimization, and teaching activities.

Qualifications

  • Be proficient in English (spoken and written).
  • Be able to work independently, accurately and methodically.
  • Be a team player, using the multidisciplinary network offered.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Publish research findings in international top-journals.
  • Contribute to FLEX-SMR project as one of the main researchers for the novel developments, but also for the related communication, dissemination and valorisation tasks.
  • Knowledge of C/C++ is a prerequisite.
  • Knowledge of Modelica, Python, and Java is an asset.
  • Experience with CasADi is an asset.
  • Have an advanced knowledge of computing systems and infrastructure.
  • Attend international project meetings and write project reports.
  • Assist in teaching activities through project work and exercise sessions.
  • Supervise Master theses.

Responsabilités

  • Develop and transfer physics-based MPC workflows to steam processes in chemical industry.
  • Work within co-design framework for integrated control and sizing of steam systems.
  • Collaborate with KU Leuven teams and partner companies on FLEX-SMR.
  • Present and publish research results at conferences and journals.
