KU Leuven is seeking a PhD candidate to help design bio-cemented mineral composites for building applications. The project blends synthetic microbiology, concrete chemistry, mineralogy and materials engineering, with collaboration across laboratories and a strong focus on scalable biomineralization processes.

You will work on Formulation, Bio-Fabrication & Characterization tasks, developing porous scaffolds and binder systems that support controlled bacterial activity while ensuring desirable

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant STEM field with strong academic performance.
  • Strong background in mineral-based materials or cement chemistry.
  • Demonstrated research skills through Master’s thesis.
  • Excellent English communication skills.

Responsabilités

  • Conduct research activities within the scope of the E.CoLith project.
  • Collaborate with researchers in microbiology, modelling and living-material architecture.
  • Participate in KU Leuven Arenberg Doctoral School activities through publications and coursework.
  • Contribute to supervision and teaching activities as appropriate.
