An academic institution is seeking a part-time (50%) academic position in Criminal Law and Procedure within the Department of Law. Job description

A part-time (50%) indivisible academic position in the field of “Criminal Law and Procedure” within the Department of Law. This position includes teaching and research activities as well as services to the community.

Teaching activities
  • From the academic year 2026-2027, the position will include the following courses:
  • DROI2207-1 – Special criminal law, 45 hours per year, compulsory course for bachelor of law students in block 2 and elective course for master’s students in criminology (around 270 students)
  • DROIXXXX – Criminal economic and social law (replacing DROI0091-1 Criminal business law), 30 hours per year, elective course for master’s students in law (around 25 students)
  • DROIXXXX – A new course to be offered in the field of criminal law, between 24 and 30 hours a year, elective/compulsory course for master’s students in law (unlike the two courses mentioned above, this course will not be offered until 2027-2028).
Research activities
  • The post-holder will carry out scientific research activities in the field of criminal law and procedure. They will be asked to develop a research project in a specific field of special criminal law.
Services to the community
  • In line with the scale of his workload, the successful candidate will join the Department of Law within the Faculty of Law, Criminal Science and Criminology. Being part of the academic staff of the Department, the Faculty and the University of Liège, he or she is expected to contribute to the life of the Faculty and to participate in its various activities and tasks. In particular, he or she will be expected to actively contribute to supervising theses, dissertations and, if necessary, practical work and internships, as well as to carry out ongoing monitoring as promotor and reader.
Qualifications required / profile
  • Hold a doctorate in legal sciences (at the latest at the time of appointment).
  • Have an excellent scientific record. Research experience in criminal law relating to the post (drafting collective works or research reports, organisation of scientific conferences, participation in research networks, etc.) is an asset.
  • Teaching experience is an asset.
  • Excellent command of French (level C1).
  • Very good command of scientific English. At least passive command of Dutch would be an asset.
  • Experience of working abroad (for example a long- or medium-term research residency during or after the PhD) is an asset.
  • Experience seeking research funding is also an asset.
  • Demonstrate team spirit and enjoy working in a team.
Selection procedure
  • There are several stages to the recruitment process.
  • The Selection Committee shortlists applicants on the basis of their application.
  • The Committee interviews shortlisted applicants in a format to be decided on by the Selection Committee.
  • The Committee’s conclusions are submitted to various Faculty and University bodies for a decision.

  • Complete list of publications (in ORBi format for applicants from within ULiège), highlighting the five publications which the applicant considers most significant to the subject area.

Conditions of employment

The position is awarded either for a fixed term of four years, or, in certain exceptional circumstances, immediately on a permanent basis.

If a fixed term contract is awarded, an evaluation will be carried out at the end of the third year.

  • If the evaluation is negative, the person’s appointment will end after the fourth year.
  • If the evaluation is positive, the person will be appointed permanently.

Remuneration

Basic appointments are made at the grade of lecturer.

The gross monthly salary at the start of the scale (on a full-time basis) is currently €5,992.58, to which is added an end of year allowance (in December) and a holiday allowance (in June).

In exception circumstances, the Faculty may submit a substantiated application to obtain a higher grade in the salary scale (length-of-service bonus).

The career of full-time teaching staff includes the grades of lecturer, professor, and full professor. Career development (after the recruitment grade) is possible through the promotions’ procedure, the terms and conditions of which are defined by the Board of Directors.
