To strengthen our vibrant Legal Team, we are currently looking for a highly motivated, experienced and dynamic Legal Counsel.

What are we looking for?

As a Legal Counsel, you will join the current legal team of 18 whose key responsibilities are to provide legal advice to the other departments and companies within the Group. You will provide legal advice and support on a wide range of commercial matters and contracts with focus on the Group’s shipping business.

Key Responsibilities

• Comprehensive understanding of various areas of commercial law, ranging from general contract law over shipping finance to shipping law;
• Management and follow up of maritime claims and legal matters;
• Management of litigation and follow up of legal proceedings in concert with our lawyers in Belgium and overseas;
• Expertise in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts including charterparties;
• Providing solution oriented legal advice on all matters in scope to enable proper monitoring, management and mitigation of the legal risks worldwide;
• Act as a true business partner for the CMB.TECH in‑house departments and overseas entities;
• Occasional travel is part of the job.

What do you bring?

• Formal education: you hold a Master’s degree in Law. An additional degree in Maritime Law and any time spent abroad in the framework of your education demonstrating an international outlook is a bonus;
• You have at least 3 to 4 years of relevant experience in private practice or as an in‑house lawyer, with sufficient and profound knowledge of commercial law. Experience in shipping law and shipping finance are interesting add‑ons;
• Languages: you are proficient in both written and spoken Dutch and English;
• You have excellent contract reviewing and drafting skills;
• You work meticulously and have an eye for detail;
• You are eager to learn;
• You combine strong legal technical and advisory skills with a clear ability to provide the relevant business insights from a legal point of view with a proactive, solution driven and resilient attitude;
• You have strong communication skills, meaning you are able to translate complex legal matters into comprehensible language for non‑lawyers;
• You are dynamic, pro‑active and solution oriented;
• You are a team player par excellence, but have the ability to work independently;
• You are flexible and pragmatic and dispose of a stress resistant personality able to manage time pressure.
