Ghent University in Belgium is seeking an experienced veterinary ophthalmologist to provide specialized care for horses, including examination, medical and surgical treatment of ocular problems. You will work in close collaboration with the large animal surgery department and may perform other large-animal procedures as needed.

You will teach veterinary medicine students, supervise master’s theses, oversee equine interns and residents, and contribute to clinically oriented research programs

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in veterinary medicine or equivalent issued by an EAEVE‑recognized institution.
• Diplomate of the ECVO and possessing knowledge/experience to independently participate in emergency surgery for large animals, or Diplomate of the ECVS Large Animals with a strong interest in equine ophthalmology.
• Experience mentoring students is preferred.
• Interest in conducting clinically applied scientific research.

YOUR TASKS

• You are responsible for providing specialized care in equine ophthalmology. This includes the examination, medical, and surgical treatment of horses with (peri)ocular problems, as well as communicating with the owners about these issues.
• In close consultation with colleagues in the large animal surgery department, you may also perform other surgical procedures on large animals (horses and ruminants) as needed, at a specialist level.
• You will teach first-, second-, and third-year veterinary medicine master’s students and contribute to practical exercises, including those in the skills lab.
• You will supervise master’s theses for veterinary medicine students.
• You will help oversee the training of equine interns and residents of the European Colleges.
• You will contribute to training programs organized within the Academy of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
• You will contribute to the department’s research, with an emphasis on clinically relevant research.
• You will actively participate in night and weekend shifts on a rotating basis.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• You hold a Master’s degree in veterinary medicine, or an equivalent degree issued by an EAEVE-recognized institution, allowing you to practice veterinary medicine in Belgium.
• You are a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and possess the necessary knowledge and experience to independently participate in general emergency surgery for large animals (horses and ruminants) or you are a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (Large Animals) and have a strong interest and commitment to furthering your education in equine ophthalmology.
• Experience in mentoring students is preferred.
• You are interested in conducting clinically applied scientific research.

• Your contract will start on1/10/2026at the earliest.
