Job description

A full‑time, potentially divisible academic position in the field of the “Didactics of Mathematics” within the Department of Mathematics. This position includes teaching and research activities as well as services to the community.

Teaching activities
  • From 2026-2027, each year, as the course leader:
    • Section 1: Differentiation and personalised maths support (5 credits, 30 hours, 3 repetitions)
    • Section 2: Differentiation and personalised maths support (5 credits, 30 hours, 5 repetitions)
    • Section 3: Maths/FMTT Didactics of numerical disciplines (2 credits, 12 hours)
    • Section 3 Maths/FMTT Optimisation and algorithmic complexity (4 credits, 24 hours)

Depending on how the course load evolves and registrations in each course, the postholder will be involved in other teaching activities related to the didactics of mathematics (MSFE, supervising dissertations for students in the S4 Mathematics stream).

Research activities
  • Develop research in the field of the didactics of mathematics.
  • Develop a network of collaborations, both internationally and locally, with notably colleagues from the Department of Mathematics and the Didactifen research unit.
  • Disseminate the results of their research in scientific communications and publications (nationally and internationally) in the field of training teachers and the didactics of mathematics.
Services to the community
  • Play an active and responsible role as a member of the teaching staff, in the institutional operations of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Mathematics, the selected research unit, and the CEFEN.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of the reform of initial teacher training (RFEI) in partnership with the Hautes Écoles and other relevant university partners.

  • Demonstrate teaching experience in mathematical sciences, acquired within an official role in a teaching establishment, a non‑profit organisation or similar structure.
  • Be able to teach in French.
  • Demonstrate a scientific research dossier in the field of the didactics of mathematics. If the applicant’s prior research activities are principally in another field, the Committee may examine the candidate’s knowledge and skills in the field of the didactics of mathematics (for example, as attested by experience in training primary school teachers), on the basis of the documents required in the application and during the potential interview.
  • Have an understanding of the structure and operation of the school system in the Wallonia‑Brussels Federation, including the teacher training reform (RFIE).
Selection procedure

The selection procedure is aligned with the regulations applied within the University of Liège. Once applications have been screened for eligibility by members of the Committee, shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview with the Committee, who will decide on the nature of the interview.

Our institutional policy is based on diversity and equal opportunity. We select candidates based on their qualities and regardless of their age, sexual orientation, origin, beliefs, disability or nationality.

Conditions of employment

The position is awarded for a fixed term of four years. A permanent appointment may be made following a two‑fold evaluation carried out at the end of the third year, looking successively at: the field and the needs of the field to which the postholder has been appointed; the quality of the postholder. If the Board of Directors decides, for duly motivated reasons, to abandon this field of study, the evaluation procedure will come to an end, and the postholder will neither be evaluated nor appointed for a fixed term.

  • If the evaluation of the postholder is negative, the person’s appointment will end after the fourth year.
