Full-time academic position - Faculty of Sciences - Field: Animal cell Biology

JOB DESCRIPTION

A full‑time indivisible academic position in the field of “Animal cell Biology” within the Department of Life Sciences. This position includes teaching and research activities as well as services to the community.


TEACHING ACTIVITIES


  • For illustrative purposes, the provisional course list for this post is as follows:

  • BIOL0006-2 – Cell biology (obligatory/optional); 30 hours Th + 40 hours Pr; 1B Biol and Bac. Phil.

  • SREM0014-1 – Learning support in biology, for Biological Sciences (optional); 20 hours REM; 1 B Biol.

  • BIOL0007-1 – Tissue biology (optional); 15 hours Th + 25 hours Pr; 1M. Sc.phys, specialised.

  • BIOL ????-? – Animal histology (compulsory); 25 hours Th + 25 hours Pr; 2B Biol.

  • BIOC0727-1 – Imaging and experimental models (compulsory); 23 hours Th + 15 hours Au; Collegiality – 1M BBMC and 1M BIM.

  • BIOC0730-1 – Development from cells to organisms (compulsory); 48 hours Th + 28 hours Pr + 22 au; Collegiality – 1M BBMC and 1M BIM.

  • SSTG0065-1 – Laboratory internship (compulsory); 6 weeks; 1M BBMC; Collegiality.

  • SSTG0068-1 – Laboratory internship (compulsory); 6 weeks; 1M BIM; Collegiality.


Courses are given up to a maximum of 250 hours including practical work. The post-holder will have assistance to supervise practical work and remediation activities.


Finally, the post-holder will be expected to supervise student projects and dissertations.


RESEARCH ACTIVITIES


  • The research activities will relate to Animal Cell Biology and must be broadly based on cell and sub‑cell imaging techniques. The post-holder must be able to develop a independent research programme which is complementary to the research themes of the Faculty or interfaculty research units, such as the GIGA‑R. They will have the possibility of actively contribution towards the development of new technological approaches within the University’s future imaging platform.


SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY


  • The post-holder will be involved in the smooth running of the Department of Life Sciences and will promote the activities of their research unit. They will actively participate in the life of the Faculty and the University.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED / PROFILE


  • Hold a doctorate in sciences, preferably in the field of animal cell biology.

  • Demonstrate:

    • International research experience in the field of animal cell biology.

    • A post‑doctoral research stay of at least six consecutive months in a laboratory other than their laboratory of origin, preferably abroad, or equivalent international experience.


  • Propose avenues for integration into the research fields of Faculty, interfaculty and University research units as well as internationally.

  • Demonstrate excellent teaching skills, both as a teacher and as a mentor to Master’s and Doctoral students.

  • Demonstrate skills in teaching specific subjects related to the vacancy at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, as well as skills in supervising student projects.

  • Be able to comfortably teach in French within a maximum of three years.


SELECTION PROCEDURE


  • The selection procedure is aligned with the regulations applied within the University of Liège.

  • Once applications have been screened for eligibility by members of the Committee, shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview with the Committee, who will decide on the nature of the interview.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The position is awarded either for a fixed term of four years, or, in certain exceptional circumstances, immediately on a permanent basis.


If a fixed term contract is awarded, an evaluation will be carried out at the end of the third year.



  • If the evaluation is negative, the person’s appointment will end after the fourth year.

  • If the evaluation is positive, the person will be appointed permanently.

REMUNERATION

Basic appointments are made at the grade of lecturer.


The gross monthly salary at the start of the scale (on a full‑time basis) is currently €5,992.58, to which is added an end of year allowance (in December) and a holiday allowance (in June).


In exception circumstances, the Faculty may submit a substantiated application to obtain a higher grade in the salary scale (length‑of‑service bonus).


The career of full‑time teaching staff includes the grades of lecturer, professor, and full professor. Career development (after the recruitment grade) is possible through the promotions’ procedure, the terms and conditions of which are defined by the Board of Directors.
