A leading neuroscience organization in Brussels is seeking a Communications Intern to enhance the visibility of neuroscience in Europe. The full-time internship spans 6 months, providing an opportunity to learn effective science communication strategies while supporting significant events like the FENS Forum 2026. This position begins in January 2026, allowing one day of remote work weekly.

Do you want to contribute to strengthening the visibility of neuroscience in Europe, support the communication strategy of a major scientific organisation, and learn how to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to broad audiences? If yes, then apply for the Communications Internship at FENS, based in Brussels, Belgium!

Context and position

As the main voice for neuroscience in Europe, FENS – Federation of European Neuroscience Societies – promotes scientific exchange and advances the understanding of the brain through its many scientific and outreach activities. With an online reach of 50,000+ people and over 50 yearly events, FENS is committed to delivering high-quality and impactful communication that supports both the neuroscience community and the broader public.

This 6-month, full-time internship (with the possibility to work one day per week from home) will coincide with the organisation and promotion of the FENS Forum 2026, the largest neuroscience conference in Europe, bringing together more than 7,000 participants. The trainee will work closely with the FENS Communications Team and will interact with the FENS Communications Committee, composed of experienced scientists engaged in science outreach.

The intern will be supervised by the FENS Communications Manager and will collaborate closely with the FENS Communications Assistant.

Nature of internship
  • Fully rounded communication experience: Gain insights into how an international organisation manages daily professional communication across social media, newsletters, websites, and event promotion.

  • Event communication & promotion: Participate in the communication activities surrounding the FENS Forum 2026, contributing to the promotion and organisation of the largest neuroscience event in Europe.

  • Science communication training: Learn how to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and effectively in collaboration with experienced scientists, including members of the FENS Communications Committee.

Objectives of internship
  • Develop communication skills across digital and science communication.

  • Become familiar with the full cycle of developing and implementing a professional communication strategy.

  • Learn how to communicate scientific content effectively to various audiences.

  • Gain practical experience using professional communication tools such as social media management software (Buffer), newsletter software (Mailchimp), and content management systems (WordPress).

Content
  • Support the activities of the FENS Communications Team.

  • Create online communication materials for social media, news alerts, and websites.

  • Keep the FENS website up to date (content updates, news items, event information).

  • Assist in the coordination of the FENS Social Media Ambassadors programme.

  • Contribute to the creation of a scientific podcast based on research published in the European Journal of Neuroscience (EJN).

  • Support communication and administration actions related to the FENS Forum 2026.
  • Interact with and support the activities of the FENS Communications Committee, composed of experienced scientists active in science outreach.

  • Support general communication processes and other team activities as needed.

Profile and conditions
  • Good communication skills and excellent command of English.

  • Good knowledge of online communication tools (e.g., Buffer, Mailchimp, WordPress).

  • Familiarity with social media practices and trends.

  • Proactive, curious, well-organised, and eager to learn.
  • Education level: MSc student, recent graduate, or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, digital media, neuroscience, or a related field.
  • Neuroscience experience is considered an advantage but is not required.

This contract is based on a Convention d’immersion professionnelle (CIP). The selected candidate will start a 6-month, full-time, Brussels-based traineeship in January 2026, with one remote working day per week.
