Job summary

Gatton State School in the Lockyer Valley is seeking a dedicated Youth Worker in a full-time wellbeing role. You will work with students and families to monitor wellbeing, address disengagement, and promote positive school experiences through counselling and targeted support.

Qualifications

• Counselling training or experience in student wellbeing preferred.
• Ability to monitor attendance data and contribute to early interventions.

Gatton State School can trace its history down through two centuries and look back with pride at its contribution to education in the Lockyer Valley. Established in 1876 Gatton State School has a long and proud history in academic, sporting and cultural pursuits.

Parents, citizens and staff have, and continue to, work long hours to secure up to date amenities and resources for the school to ensure students are able to grow strive and succeed.

The school caters for a diverse student population, including those for whom English is a second language, from families associated with the University of Queensland, the urban centre of Gatton, and the rural industry. The approximate enrolment is 500 students.

Your opportunity:

Youth workers employed as a wellbeing professional may:

Use school attendance and other data to monitor students' wellbeing and engagement and intervene early by providing counselling and support to address reasons for wellbeing concerns and disengagement.

Work with students, and their families, to determine and implement strategies suited to their context that help students to have a more positive educational experience.

Enhance students' social skills, assertiveness, self-esteem and problem-solving skills through a strengths-based approach to providing support.

Develop targeted strategies with students to address school avoidance or difficulties navigating social and learning situations.

Work collaboratively with cohorts of students that may be facing similar challenges to build peer relationships and establish social networks for support.

As a Youth Worker at GSS, you will work from a strengths-based approach to:

To provide direct support to teachers and students to promote school attendance and engagement.

Assist students to regulate, relate, reason and restore to to enhance their engagement with learning.

Work with small groups to implement social skilling and engagement programs.

Provide professional development and support teachers and work closely with colleagues.

Support families and students to access supports.

Work as a part of our student services team.

Monitor, evaluate and develop strategies that build and maintain positive relationships.

Build partnerships with community organisations, external stakeholders to improve outcomes.

Facilitate community professional development sessions for staff, parents and caregivers.

Promote a positive school culture.
