Job summary

QinetiQ Australia invites applications for an experienced Workshop Manager in Everleigh, Sydney. You will supervise the DSTG workshop, coordinate maintenance, ensure WHS compliance, and guide craft teams, subcontractors, and clients through fabrication and assembly projects.

The role demands a mechanical trade background, strong CNC/manual fabrication skills, and a proactive safety mindset. Australian Defence security clearance (NV1) is required or obtainable. Online applications only.

We are now accepting applications for an experienced Workshop Manager with a strong trade/engineering background to join our team in Everleigh, Sydney.

The opportunity
As Workshop Manager

your responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • The day-today supervision of the Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) workshop
  • Maintaining machinery maintenance requirements which are handled by the workshop team or through OEM/subcontractors
  • Maintenance of the WHS system compliance including workplace inspections, lifting equipment management, plant maintenance, chemical identification, storage and disposal and Chemalert auditing
  • Performing facilities management activities
  • Estimating and quoting of materials as well as stock management of consumables and tooling
  • Generating and reviewing of machinery SOP’s and RA’s
  • Scheduling and project tracking/updates
  • Provision of design for manufacture advice to clients
  • Conducting workshop and machinery inductions
  • Upkeep of all registers (induction, competency, ChemAlert, Test and Tag
  • Ensuring safety assurance in alignment with QinetiQ procedures and DSTG contractual obligations
  • Management for security requirements for all projects
  • Conducting mechanical fabrication and repair work using manual and CNC machinery
  • The assembly and integration of components and sub-assemblies
  • Forklift operations

To be successful in the position of Workshop Manager, you will need to bring with you:

  • A mechanical trade qualification or equivalent practical experience with strong capability in manual machining, CNC machining, mechanical fabrication and fitting and assembly and a current Forklift licence
  • Previous experience running and supervising a workshop, including the supervision of tradespeople, technicians and subcontractors
  • Demonstrated experience of planning preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Ability to manage workshop standards, housekeeping and productivity
  • Demonstrated experience of creating a culture where safety and quality are non-negotiable
  • Ability to handle performance, behavioural or operational issues when they arise
  • Practical experience with WHS/OHS systems, risk assessments, safe work procedures/SOP’s, workplace inspections, lifting equipment inspections and registers, test and tag, PPE, hazardous substances, contractor safety and workshop inductions
  • Strong documentation and compliance experience
  • Work scheduling, resource allocation, project tracking, progress reporting, quoting and procurement experience
  • Extremely strong communication skills with the ability to interact with multiple stakeholders such as tradespeople, engineers, OEM’s, subcontractors and the client

Due to the nature of the role, applicants must hold an Australian Defence security clearance, NV1 minimum or have the ability to obtain one
