Job summary

Carpentaria Shire Council is seeking a Workshop Leading Hand to join the Engineering Services team at the Normanton Depot. You will lead daily workshop activities, provide hands-on support to Diesel Fitters and Apprentices, and mentor staff.

The role requires a Mechanical Trade Certificate with experience in heavy vehicles, hydraulics, and fault-finding. A Heavy Rigid Licence is expected, with MC desirable. Salary is competitive with allowances under the Certified Agreement.

Qualifications

• recognised Mechanical Trade Certificate in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Commercial Vehicles or Light Vehicle Maintenance.
• Demonstrated mechanical servicing, maintenance and fault-finding experience.
• Experience with heavy vehicles, machinery and hydraulic systems.
• Ability to lead, communicate effectively and guide other employees.
• Minimum HR Driver Licence; MC desirable.
• Heavy machinery tickets or willingness to obtain them.

Responsibilities

Carpentaria Shire Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Workshop Leading Hand to join our Engineering Services team based at the Normanton Depot.

This is a hands-on leadership role supporting the Workshop Foreman with the day-to-day coordination of workshop activities, while providing technical guidance and support to Diesel Fitters and Apprentice Diesel Fitters.

About the Role

As Workshop Leading Hand, you will:

• Coordinate daily workshop jobs and monitor work progress.
• Provide hands‑on mechanical and technical support to workshop staff.
• Guide and mentor fitters and apprentices.
• Assist with maintenance scheduling, repairs and project work.
• Undertake diagnostics, repairs, welding, hydraulics and general mechanical maintenance.
• Carry out work in the workshop and at Council worksites and remote camps.
• Support the Workshop Foreman with maintaining a safe, organised and productive workshop.

To Be Successful You Will Have

• A recognised Mechanical Trade Certificate in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Commercial Vehicles or Light Vehicle Maintenance.
• Demonstrated mechanical servicing, maintenance and fault‑finding experience.
• Experience working with heavy vehicles, machinery and hydraulic systems.
• The ability to lead, communicate effectively and provide guidance to other employees.
• A minimum Heavy Rigid (HR) Driver Licence, Multi Combination (MC) desirable.
• Heavy machinery tickets or a willingness to obtain them.
• Salary: $103,435.07 – $52.35 per hour (dependent on qualifications and experience), plus superannuation and applicable allowances in accordance with the Carpentaria Shire Council Certified Agreement.
