Ready to lead positive safety outcomes and make a real difference every day?

Welcome to Quilpie Shire Council, where you'll find real opportunities, real community and the life you want to live. We may be a small council, but we're proudly punching well above our weight. Serving our community in Western Queensland since 1930, we've continually evolved with the needs of our people - and we're just getting started.

We're seeking a highly motivated Workplace Health and Safety Specialist to help us maintain a safe, healthy and positive workplace culture across our organisation. Take the next step in your career, broaden your experience across a diverse local government environment, and work with a great team that values collaboration and making a real difference. Together, we'll continue building a safer and stronger future for Quilpie.

Description
Your opportunity

As our Workplace Health & Safety Specialist (WHS Specialist), you will play a key role in strengthening a safe, healthy and positive workplace culture. Reporting to the Executive Manager People & Safety, you will lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of Council's work health and safety management and quality assurance systems. Through providing specialist WHS advice and support to management and staff you will ensure legislative compliance and drive a proactive safety culture.

With integrity and pride, you will:
  • Monitor safety performance
  • Coordinate training and rehabilitation programs
  • Investigate incidents
  • Conduct audits and maintain statutory responsibilities
What You'll Bring

You are a safety focused professional who is passionate about creating healthy, safe and supportive workplaces. Committed to improving safety outcomes for our people and community, you build strong relationships, communicate effectively and work collaboratively across all levels of an organisation.

You embody our values of Respect, Communication, Fun and Humour, Pride, Trust and Teamwork and are driven to make a positive impact through safety and wellbeing.

To thrive in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety, Occupational Health, Risk Management or a related field.
  • Qualified Rehabilitation Return to Work Coordinator.
  • Successful completion of Traffic Management Design
  • Current General Construction Induction Card
  • Current unrestricted 'C' Class Drivers Licence
  • Experience contributing to cross-functional teams and supporting shared safety and wellbeing goals
  • Proven experience in coaching and mentoring others, including leading WHS personnel in a supportive and inclusive manner.

Although it's not essential, it would be great if you had:

  • Experience participating in initiatives that promote inclusion, equity, or employee wellbeing.
  • Experience developing communication strategies or resources to promote WHS awareness and engagement
  • Experience managing digital systems for safety reporting, monitoring and inspections (e.g. Safety Culture, Sheqsy)
  • Experience supporting psychological safety and wellbeing initiatives in the workplace.
Why Quilpie Shire Council?

We're a Council with big ideas and bold energy. As our Workplace Health & Safety Specialist, you'll belong to a forward-thinking team that's recognised in the region for the energy and smarts we bring to new projects... with plenty of chat and humour along the way.

We care about our work here, but balance matters. That means you'll be encouraged to witch off at the end of the day, and with a commute measured in minutes rather than hours, you'll have more time to enjoy the lifestyle that regional living offers.

Located in the heart of Queensland's Outback, Quilpie Shire provides the opportunity to build both a rewarding career and an exceptional lifestyle. Our welcoming community is known for its friendliness, strong local connections and vibrant event calendar. Here, you'll have the chance to make a meaningful impact in the workplace while becoming part of a community where people genuinely look out for one another.

While soaking in the spectacular Outback landscapes, you can help us create safer workplaces while enjoying a lifestyle that gives you the best of both career and community.

You'll also be rewarded for your commitment with a range of benefits, including:

  • Salary packaging options
  • Our annual Wellbeing Week, with everything from hearing and skin checks to healthy cooking workshops and advice on super retirement fund options
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • 9 day fortnights
