Job summary

Huon Valley Council is seeking a newly created Principal WHS & Emergency Management role. It is a strategic, hands-on position that will lead WHS and emergency management across the organisation, ensuring preparedness and effective response.

You will embed a safety culture, manage risk, and collaborate across stakeholders while enabling flexible, hybrid working arrangements. Starting wage is $97,977.45 plus 15% Employer Superannuation.

Qualifications

• Relevant qualification in WHS, emergency management or related field.
• Sound knowledge of WHS and emergency management legislation with practical application.
• High-level communication, consultation and negotiation skills across stakeholders.
• Strong organisational and time management abilities for multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead Council’s WHS Management System, drive improvements and embed safety culture.
• Test, exercise and review Municipal Emergency Management Plan and supporting processes.
• Maintain Business Continuity Plan to ensure essential services.
• Lead risk treatment programs, investigate incidents and run workplace audits.
• Coach and upskill leaders in safe, prepared, and resilient practices.
• Turn data into insight and brief executives on implications for Council.
• Step into Municipal Coordinator role during emergencies.
• Represent Council on regional/state emergency management committees.

The Role:

This is a strategic, hands‑on position responsible for leading and embedding WHS and emergency management across our organisation, where no two weeks will look the same.

You’ll be responsible for:

• Leading Council’s WHS Management System, driving improvements, updating procedures, and embedding a safety culture of shared ownership and everyday awareness
• Testing, exercising and reviewing Council’s Municipal Emergency Management Plan and supporting processes
• Keeping Council’s Business Continuity Plan up to date so essential services never miss a beat
• Getting out and about, leading risk treatment programs, investigating incidents and running workplace audits
• Coaching and upskilling leaders, embedding safe, prepared, and resilient practices across the board
• Turning data into insight, tracking trends and brief the executive team on what it means for Council
• Stepping into the Municipal Coordinator role and leading Council’s response when an emergency is declared
• Representing Council on regional and state emergency management committees and forums

What You will Bring:

To thrive in this role, you will have the following:

• A relevant qualification in WHS, emergency management or a related field or relevant practical experience
• Sound working knowledge of WHS and emergency management legislation, with the ability to apply it practically
• High‑level communication, consultation and negotiation skills, and the ability to connect with stakeholders at every level
• Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
• Confidence with digital systems (Microsoft 365, WHS platforms, ArcGIS) and using data to inform recommendations
• Experience coordinating emergency response, recovery and business continuity planning
• A resilient, self‑starting approach, comfortable working autonomously and staying steady under pressure
• A track record of driving process improvements and leading change, backed by sound emotional intelligence and judgement
