Job summary

Snowy Hydro seeks a Scientific Services Lead to enhance short-term meteorological, hydrological, and demand forecasts while delivering broader data science solutions. Your role splits into core forecasting (50%), data stewardship/vendor management (20%), and innovation (30%).

Hybrid setup based in Sydney, with focus on automation to unlock higher-value analytics. You will manage external data contracts, lead predictive modeling efforts, and mentor teams across Trading, Operations, and Commercial

Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification in meteorology or related quantitative discipline.
• Proven expertise in 1–2 week operational weather, water inflow, solar, and energy demand forecasting within the NEM or water resource management contexts.
• Advanced proficiency in Python for data science, modeling, validation, uncertainty analysis and automation.
• Commercial acumen to manage vendor contracts and external data streams.

Responsibilities

• Implement, maintain, and automate high-resolution weather, catchment inflow, and snowpack models across operational areas.
• Deliver critical operational advice during extreme weather, supporting energy trading, water resource management and asset safety.
• Source, procure, and manage contracts with external data and forecast suppliers, monitoring quality and performance.
• Lead innovation and data science projects to develop analytical tools, displays, and predictive models for Trading, Operations, and Commercial units.
• Conduct internal knowledge-transfer and training to build meteorological awareness and self-service capabilities.
