The Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Essendon Fields is a 24-hour emergency and referral hospital in Victoria offering a 12-month Small Animal Surgery Internship. The full-time position starts Jan/Feb 2027 and provides exposure to orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic and oncologic surgery with access to advanced equipment and a collaborative team.

The interns assist with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical cases and post-operative care, while gaining radiography, CT and MRI experience.

Qualifications

• You must be a registered veterinarian in Australia and eligible for Victorian registration.
• Excellent communication skills and work ethic, as well as a strong knowledge base to build.
• Clinical experience is desirable but not essential.
• This position is suited to a highly motivated vet seeking to further their skills in Small Animal Surgery.
• Team coherence is extremely important and you should be a team player and an active learner.

12-Month Small Animal Surgery Internship - Full Time

• Start Date: Jan/Feb 2027

ARH Essendon Fields is a 24-hour multi-disciplinary emergency and referral hospital. The hospital has specialists in Surgery, Internal Medicine and Emergency & Critical Care. Dr. Simon Kudnig, who is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVSc), a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Dip ACVS) and an ACVS Founding Fellow of Surgical Oncology, is the Head of the Surgery department. We see a wide range of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic and oncologic surgery, including advanced surgical oncologic procedures. We are equipped with arthroscopy, digital radiography, IMEX linear and circular external fixation systems, TPLO equipment, Kyon equipment (PAUL), BioMedtrix equipment (I-Loc, THR), Ligasure, negative pressure wound therapy units, plating systems, Novetech instrumentation, neurosurgery equipment, intraoperative fluoroscopy, as well as a CT scanner and MRI unit on-site.

Job Description

The Surgery department is staffed by 3 ACVS-boarded Specialist Surgeons, a surgical ANZCVS-trained Registrar, a Surgical Resident, 2 Interns, and a large team of highly skilled surgical nurses. The role encompasses assisting the surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, case management and patient discharges, assisting the nurses with anaesthesia, and assisting with post-operative care of patients. The interns will also be trained in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI. We see a large and varied surgical caseload, with cases from the Emergency department as well as referrals from referring practices all over Victoria and Tasmania. We value work-life balance; therefore, the position is Monday to Friday 4 days a week with no after-hours requirements. We strive to provide an enjoyable and supportive work environment.
