Job summary

Telstra is seeking a seasoned SQL Server database professional to join a Defence Operations team within a large-scale enterprise environment. The role focuses on optimising system performance, investigating complex issues, and driving continuous improvement across critical communications services.

The position is on-site with possible bases across major Australian cities, and requires minimum NV1 clearance.

Qualifications

• Experience in SQL Server administration and performance tuning.
• Ability to develop efficient SQL queries for troubleshooting and reporting.
• Familiarity with automation and scripting to improve operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain and optimise SQL Server databases and services.
• Develop and execute SQL queries for troubleshooting, reporting and analysis.
• Monitor database health, performance, availability and data integrity.
• Investigate incidents and perform root cause analysis with sustainable fixes.
• Identify opportunities for automation and operational improvements.
• Support Unified Communications platforms such as Teams and Skype for Business.
• Maintain accurate system records and runbooks; document procedures.
• Collaborate with engineering, service delivery and stakeholders to meet SLAs.

Using your SQL and database expertise, you will optimise system performance, investigate complex issues, drive continuous improvement, and contribute to reliable communication services across the Defence landscape.

This is on-site opportunity and you can be based either in Canberra, Adelaide , Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.

A minimum Active NV1 clearance is essential to be considered for this role.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain and optimise SQL Server databases and associated services.
• Develop and execute SQL queries for troubleshooting, reporting, and operational analysis.
• Monitor database and system health, performance, availability, and data integrity.
• Investigate incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement sustainable fixes.
• Identify opportunities for automation, scripting, and operational process improvement.
• Support Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business, and associated Unified Communications platforms.
• Maintain accurate system records, operational procedures, and knowledge of articles.
• Collaborate with engineering, service delivery and customer stakeholders to meet agreed service levels and governance requirements.

About You

You are a technically capable database or infrastructure professional who enjoys solving complex problems and improving service performance within a mission-critical environment.

You Will Bring

• Strong experience in SQL Server administration, database support, and query development.
• Experience troubleshooting database, application and system-related issues.
• Knowledge of PowerShell scripting, monitoring tools, and automation.
• Exposure Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business or enterprise collaboration platforms.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Defence experience, ITIL certification, Linux or VMware knowledge will be highly regarded.
