Job summary

Arts Northern Rivers is seeking a Treatment Plant Operator to join our Treatment and Trades team in Lismore. You will operate and maintain water and wastewater infrastructure, ensuring safe and compliant delivery of essential services.

The role covers laboratory and field testing, regulatory reporting, water quality sampling, sewer and water treatment plant operations, and chemical handling, with on-call roster availability and a supportive EAP program.

Qualifications

  • Cert II in Water Industry Operations or relevant qualification.
  • Current Class C Licence and White Card required.
  • Experience in water/wastewater operations preferable.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain water and wastewater analytical equipment and conduct tests.
  • Perform sampling and testing to meet regulatory obligations.
  • Operate sewerage and water treatment plant systems in compliance with standards.
  • Handle chemicals safely and follow MSDS and safety protocols.

About this Position:

We are pleased to invite applications for a Treatment Plant Operator to join our dedicated Treatment and Trades team. As a Treatment Plant Operator, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining critical water and wastewater infrastructure, ensuring essential services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards. This diverse hands-on role offers the opportunity to work across treatment plant operations, environmental monitoring, laboratory testing, infrastructure maintenance, and water quality management.

What we trust you to deliver:

  • Laboratory and Field Testing: Operate and maintain water and wastewater analytical equipment to conduct routine laboratory and field tests in accordance with regulatory and operational requirements.
  • Regulatory Reporting and Data Collection: Perform regular sampling and testing to meet compliance obligations for regulatory bodies and internal standards.
  • Water Quality Sampling: Undertake water quality sampling in accordance with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and Council protocols across the Lismore LGA and surrounding villages.
  • Sewer Treatment Plant Operations: Operate, monitor, and maintain sewerage treatment plant systems and associated network assets in compliance with relevant legislation, environmental standards, and Council procedures.
  • Water Treatment Plant Operations: Operate, monitor, and maintain water treatment plant systems and processes in alignment with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and Council’s operational standards.
  • Chemical Handling: Safely handle and apply treatment process chemicals in accordance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Council safety protocols.

What you will need to be successful:

  • Cert II in Water Industry Operations or relevant qualification in a similar field and/or relevant experience
  • Current Class C Licence
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card)
  • Work Safely at Heights – RIIWHS204E
  • Participate in immunisation program for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B viruses (have or willing to obtain)
  • Enter and Work in Confined Spaces – RIIWH202E or similar (have or willing to obtain)
  • Work Safely at Heights – RIIWHS204E or similar
  • Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker certificate (have or willing to obtain)
  • Rescue from a live LV Panel – UETDRRF004 or similar
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – HLTAID009
  • Availability to work an on-call roster outside of normal working hours

Salary: From $1,353.60 to $1,556.64 per week plus superannuation
