Job summary

Arup Australia is seeking a Transmission and Distribution Technical Director to lead major electrical engineering projects in NSW and Australasia. You will coordinate multi-office design teams, ensure delivery on time and to budget, and build strong client relationships to grow the Arup brand in the energy sector.

Job description

Transmission and Distribution Technical Director

This role would fit into an established regional consulting team. You will work on a range of Australian and international assignments, predominantly as the lead for Transmission and Distribution projects, and support on other related renewable energy, hydro-electric, energy storage projects and large load customer connection projects. As a respected project leader in the industry, you will have a demonstrable appreciation of all aspects of the project lifecycle. Relevant workstreams would cover concept design, feasibility studies and front-end engineering design through detailed design and owner’s engineer capacity. You will be involved in scoping, winning, leading and directing projects, as well as mentoring and training staff on electrical engineering project delivery.

As part of the project leadership team, you will be responsible for driving and ensuring the successful delivery of multidisciplinary projects at all scales depending on market opportunities. You will be responsible for the coordination of design teams across multiple offices to ensure design packages are delivered in accordance with the contract requirements, to program, on budget and of the highest technical quality.

The Opportunity:

• Willingness to lead the purposeful growth Transmission and Distribution electrical engineering in Australasia, while assisting the other regional teams.
• Facilitating the establishment of strong client relationships that underpins the growth of the Arup brand and offering both within the broader Australasian markets.
• Taking responsibility for the current and future performance of electrical engineering in NSW and assisting the wider regional teams.
• Developing and implementing longer-term plans in line with the Arup business strategy in general and the Energy strategy in particular.
• Working in close collaboration with Business Leaders to build client relationships, secure pipeline and negotiate major contracts.
• Supporting the delivery of a diversity of energy related projects mainly in New South Wales but also in other Australian jurisdictions. This will involve coordinating people, facilities and resources within tight timelines and in line with budgetary constraints.
• Supporting the advance of skills and knowledge sharing across the region, identifying and addressing what we need to do in order to become the leading professionals in energy.
• Supporting the Energy Team Leader in relation to recruitment, appraisals, performance development, morale and motivation.
• Taking accountability for executing responsibilities as outlined in Arup’s Quality Management System in Project Director and Technical leadership roles.

Is this role right for you?

• Recognised relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering with a primary focus of HV/EHV Design Management, HV/EHV Design and HV/EHV Design Review
• Detailed understanding of Electricity Transmission and Distribution (T&D) projects as well as HV/EHV requirements across energy markets and sub-markets for example the HV supply requirements to Hydrogen Production Facilities or the installation of grid scale PV and BESS.
• A thorough understanding of the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM), the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), the South-West Interconnected System (SWIS), the National Electricity Rules (NER) and the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) in NSW and the ACT
• Recognised technical leader that can win bids and provide support for bids that have HV/EHV as either the primary context or a secondary sub-element, including estimation.
• Relevant industry experience in Substation Design Management and Mains Design Management within a consulting business environment;
• Good working knowledge of associated software packages necessary for design of electrical and power systems (incl. but not limited to PLS-CADD, CYMCAP, CDEGS, ETAP)
• Client & Stakeholder Relationship Management
• Contract Administration & Construction Supervision
• Good communication and interpersonal skills (including formal and informal presentations, written communications and reports).
• A keen sense of maintaining high standards.
• Creative, innovative and able to deliver solutions within constraints of project budget.
• Keen understanding of “customer” needs (both internal and external), and the issues which may impact on maintaining effectiveness within a commercial environment.
• Ability to relate and work well with people at all levels within the team and within the wider office, as well as externally with clients.
