Job summary

PLS is seeking a Trainer / Permit Officer to ensure MSDP personnel are trained, competent, authorised and compliant with HSE requirements. Training materials, assessments and records management will be handled in collaboration with subject matter experts.

Training is delivered via Moodle with VOC assessments for processing, mechanical and electrical teams. This is a 12‑month maximum term role with an 8/6 FIFO roster from Perth or DIDO in the Pilbara region.

Qualifications

• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is required and operational/technical or trade experience in mining, processing or heavy industry helps.
• Experience delivering competency-based training and Verification of Competency assessments for operating or maintenance teams preferred.
• Strong understanding of safety-critical work activities, risk management and HSE requirements in high-risk environments.
• Ability to develop, review and improve training materials, assessments, Safe Work Instructions and procedures with subject matter experts.
• Meticulous with training records and auditable documentation; proficient in records management systems.
• Collaborative communicator who can coach others and build positive relationships.

Responsibilities

• Conduct Training Needs Analyses to identify competency gaps and training requirements.
• Design, develop and review site-specific training materials and SOPs with SMEs.
• Deliver training and VOC assessments for processing, mechanical and electrical teams.
• Maintain accurate training records, competency matrices and authorization data.
• Coordinate with supervisors and Learning & Development to plan and track training delivery.
• Coach SMEs and team members in practical training and safe work practices.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Process Manager, this role will ensure all MSDP personnel are trained, deemed competent, authorised, and permitted to perform work in accordance with legislative, organisational, and site‑specific HSE requirements.

Working closely with the Production Supervisor, the Trainer / Permit Officer develops and reviews training materials, maintains training records and competency matrix compliance, and conducts Verification of Competency (VOC) assessments for processing, mechanical, and electrical teams. Training is delivered via PLS' Moodle Platform with records managed in INX Intuition.

This is a 12‑month maximum term role which operates on an 8/6 FIFO roster from Perth or DIDO in the Pilbara region.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct Training Needs Analyses for new and existing personnel, identifying competency gaps and recommending training requirements aligned to operational and safety‑critical activities.
• Design, develop and review site‑specific training materials, assessments, Safe Work Instructions and operational documentation in consultation with subject matter experts.
• Deliver training and Verification of Competency assessments for processing, mechanical and electrical teams, supporting consistent competency‑based learning across the operation.
• Maintain accurate and auditable training records, competency matrices and authorisation data, ensuring compliance information is current and readily available.
• Partner with supervisors and the Learning and Development team to plan, schedule and track training delivery, proactively addressing overdue competencies and emerging skill gaps.
• Coach subject matter experts and team members in practical field training, reinforcing safe work practices, procedural discipline and ongoing workforce capability development.

About you

• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, supported by relevant operational, technical or trade experience in a mining, processing or heavy industry environment.
• Demonstrated experience delivering competency‑based training and Verification of Competency assessments for operational or maintenance teams.
• Strong understanding of safety‑critical work activities, risk management practices and HSE requirements within high‑risk operational environments.
• Ability to develop, review and improve training materials, assessments, Safe Work Instructions and operational procedures in consultation with subject matter experts.
• Confident using training, competency and records management systems, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to accurate, auditable documentation.
• A collaborative communicator who can coach others, build positive working relationships and support a safe, capable and continuously improving workforce.
