South Eastern Sydney Local Health District is seeking an unaccredited Trainee in Cardiothoracic Surgery at St George Hospital, Kogarah NSW. The position is a temporary full-time appointment until 31 January 2027, with a remuneration range of AUD 89,095 to AUD 139,187 per annum and a 38-hour week.

The Cardiothoracic department handles around 200 cardiac and 200 thoracic procedures yearly, with a mix of general thoracic and minimally invasive surgery.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • (a) Ideally experience in a Cardiothoracic Surgical Department (b) ICU experience preferred, but not essential
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • High level communication skills, both written and verbal, skills in time management, prioritisation and problem solving.
  • Preparedness to participate in an afterhours roster.
  • Commitment to own continuing professional development and self-education including working towards completion of relevant College examinations ie Preference given to completion of GSSE
  • 1. Commitment to quality improvement and patient safety 2. At least three years' post graduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent)

Responsibilities

  • Assist in cardiothoracic surgical procedures and patient care in the department.
  • Coordinate with 4 consultants and 4 registrars on a rotating theatre roster.
  • Attend weekly Outpatient/Post-operative Review Clinic and Pre-Admissions Clinic.
  • Participate in departmental teaching sessions.

What you’ll be doing

TheCardiothoracicdepartment (including the facility at St George Private) performs around200cardiac and200thoracic surgical procedures per year, and general thoracic surgery (including minimally invasive).There are generally between 12 – 20 inpatients at any one time. Most of the cardiac caseload is coronary and valvular surgery, as well as routine and emergency aortic surgery. Minimally invasive surgery cardiac and thoracic surgery is performed according to surgeon preferences.Assistance at the adjacent Private Hospital may be required.

There are 4 consultants, who operate a daily theatre list on a rotating roster. Generally, 4 registrars (including one accredited trainee) staff a 2-shift roster from Monday to Friday (3 registrars from 0700 – 1700, and one from 1200 – 2000). Weekends and weeknight cover are rostered 1:4 providing a 24-hour service.

Unaccredited Trainees are expected to co-ordinate and attend weekly Outpatient/Post-operative Review Clinic, as well as Pre-Admissions Clinic. Departmental teaching occurs weekly.

St George Hospitalis an accredited, principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales. It is the largest hospital in SESLHD with 627 inpatient beds. The hospital’s proximity to Sydney airport makes it a vital service, providing first response to the airport precinct.

The hospital is in Kogarah, 14 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD and a kilometre from Botany Bay. It is well serviced by buses, trains and major roads. The area is well known for its cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants, as well as its food and cultural markets which showcase the distinct flavours and traditions of Kogarah's multicultural community.

Selection Criteria
