Southern NSW Local Health District seeks an Emergency Department physician for Port Macquarie and Kempsey. The role involves patient assessment and urgent care in the ED, with opportunities to perform procedures and contribute to a high-volume trauma service.

This temporary position requires FACEM eligibility or equivalent experience, with rotations between services and after-hours duties to support the regional health network.

Qualifications

  • Essential requirements: relevant medical qualifications and current registration; FACEM welcome or eligible to obtain; ability to work in a rural regional ED.
  • Demonstrated commitment to rural health and ability to operate in a high-demand environment.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork and problem‑solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality clinical care and patient assessment in the ED and occasionally beyond (eg MET calls).
  • Perform necessary procedures for Critical Care patients under supervision as required by the ED leadership.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team across Port Macquarie and Kempsey sites, including after-hours rotations and travel between services.

Yet it also has a vibrant town centre with a sophisticated dining scene and a large theatre. This place makes you feel relaxed and energised.

With a population of over 88,000 in the urban area it is one of the fastest growing places in New South Wales. Port Macquarie Base Hospital is a 228 bed level five facility with a 24-hour Emergency Department and a range of specialist services, including intensive care, anaesthetics, cardiology, stroke, respiratory, paediatrics, obstetrics, general medicine, orthopaedics, urology, vascular, general surgery, gastroenterology, oncology, ophthalmology and mental health. This regional hospital has seen a huge growth in presentations and now sees 50,000 per year, with 25% paediatrics, fast track area and short stay unit. The Base Hospital is the main referral centre for the Mid North Coast and is a regional trauma centre. It is also affiliated with the University of New South Wales rural clinical medical school co-located on the hospital campus and Charles Sturt University.

Kempsey District Hospital is a rural hospital 45 minutes from Port Macquarie. It has approximately 30,000 presentations per year (25% paediatrics and 25% indigenous), There is on site medical wards, maternity services, rehab, surgery and mental health. Some patients will be referred to port Macquarie Base Hospital for specialty inpatient care. We strive to deliver a high level of consultant-led care to both our Emergency departments in the Hastings Macleay Clinical Network regardless of the location.

Come and join our team in the Emergency Departments of Port Macquarie and Kempsey in a fun, stimulating and challenging work environment. There are daily opportunities for procedural skills improvement with 30 supportive Emergency Specialists (FACEMs), who are committed to your development and wellbeing. They provide supervision 24/7, in person from 07:00 – 24:00 and on call overnight. You will also have access to salary packaging and a fitness passport. To provide quality clinical care and perform patient assessment and clinical examination of patients, both within the Emergency department, and occasionally outside the department (eg MET calls).

To perform necessary procedures for Critical Care patients within the scope of abilities and training, or under the supervision of the Director of theEmergency Department and Staff Specialists in the Emergency Department.

  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role
  • Demonstrated commitment to rural and regional health with an understanding of the health requirements of these communities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills (at the required level of competency), judgement and expertise
  • Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and computer skills
  • A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours overtime and the required rotations between services and geographical location to deliver patient care (including rural locations)
