Job summary

Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) is seeking a Trainee Clinical Coder at Flinders Medical Centre to translate clinical narratives into ICD-10-AM codes for statistics, planning, and research. You will work under a Coding Auditor/Educator to ensure accuracy and consistency.

The role requires completion or near completion of the Diploma of Clinical Coding and proven ability to handle medical data, with opportunities for ongoing training and professional development within SALHN.

Qualifications

• Completion of a recognised HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding course or near completion if sponsored.
• Demonstrated competency in ICD-10-AM coding (current edition).
• Ability to integrate, compute and interpret information to produce coded clinical data.

Responsibilities

About the role:

The Trainee Clinical Coder is responsible to a SALHN Coding Auditor/Educator for the timely and accurate translation of medical and procedural terminology into ICD-10-AM (International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision-Australian Modification) current edition, for use in statistical analysis, epidemiology, hospital planning, research, and for the auditing of quality patient care.

Duties for the role will include:

• Using knowledge learned from Clinical Coding courses to translate the narrative descriptions of diagnoses and procedures from the EMR into valid, accurate and complete ICD-10-AM codes in accordance with National and State standards.
• Liaising with a designated SALHN Coding Auditor/Educator or Senior Clinical Coder regarding queries or problems in determining appropriate codes in order to ensure consistency.
• Accessing laboratory and radiology results. Interpret reports using learned knowledge to ensure accurate code selection.
• Participating in relevant courses, including Coding Seminars, workshops, and forums for continuing and further education.
• Participating in regular staff meetings.
• Contributing to the development of an integrated team approach and culture which is highly responsive to the needs of our consumers.

About you:

• Successful completion of a recognised HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding course or equivalent, together with demonstrated competency in ICD-10-AM (current edition) coding OR Near completion of a recognised HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding course if sponsored by Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) or SA Health, Health Information Governance Unit (HIGU).
• Ability to integrate, compute and interpret information required to produce coded clinical data.
• Organisational, analytical and numeracy skills.
• Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
• Communicate and relate effectively in individual and group situations with health professionals including medical, nursing, administrative and clerical personnel.
• Ability to use initiative.
• Ability to build and maintain effective interpersonal relationships and work as part of a team.
