Job summary

Ipswich Grammar School is seeking a hands-on Trades Assistant to support a range of construction, renovation and refurbishment projects across the School. Reporting to the Construction Manager, you will work closely with the Lead Carpenter on site preparation, material handling and general labouring duties.

The successful candidate will have prior experience in building or construction, be confident with tools, and bring a proactive approach to keeping projects progressing efficiently.

Qualifications

• Experience in building, construction, renovation or labouring.
• Ability to use common hand tools and power tools.
• Current White Card and driver's licence; Blue Card or ability to obtain one before starting.

Responsibilities

• Support the Construction Manager and Lead Carpenter on construction, renovation and refurbishment projects.
• Perform general labouring duties including site preparation, demolition, material handling, clean-up and waste removal.
• Prepare tools, equipment, materials and work areas; load, unload and store project supplies safely.
• Assist with carpentry and building-related works: measuring, cutting, assembling, installing and removing materials.

Responsibilities of the role include:

• Support the Construction Manager and Lead Carpenter across construction, renovation and refurbishment projects throughout the School.

• Undertake general labouring duties including site preparation, demolition, material handling, clean-up and waste removal.

• Prepare tools, equipment, materials and work areas, including loading, unloading and safely storing project supplies.

• Assist with carpentry and building-related works, including measuring, cutting, assembling, installing and removing materials, fixtures and fittings.

• Support external contractors and tradespeople, and assist with deliveries, stock control and collection of project materials as required.

• Maintain clean and organised work areas while ensuring all works are completed in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements and School procedures.

The successful candidate should possess:

• Previous experience in building, construction, renovation, labouring or a Trade Assistant role.

• Practical experience using common hand tools, power tools and construction equipment.

• A good understanding of building and construction practices, with experience working alongside qualified tradespeople highly regarded.

• The ability to safely undertake manual handling and physically demanding work.

• A current White Card and driver's licence, along with a current Blue Card or ability to obtain one prior to commencement.

• A practical, proactive approach with the ability to anticipate what’s needed and help keep projects progressing efficiently.
