Job Description

Telecommunications Technical Officer / Technologist
Position Overview

We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Telecommunications Technical Officer or Technologist to join our team and contribute to the delivery of reliable, high-performance telecommunications infrastructure. This role is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance, and optimisation of complex communication networks and systems across a range of technologies.

The ideal candidate brings solid hands-on technical experience, strong analytical capability, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. This position suits a proactive professional who is committed to maintaining the highest standards of network performance and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and maintain microwave, satellite, telemetry, and other radio and electromagnetic communication systems, ensuring all equipment operates to specification and within regulatory requirements.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve network faults, performance issues, and equipment malfunctions in a timely and effective manner, minimising disruption to services.
  • Integrate telecommunications networks with computer hardware, software platforms, operating systems, databases, and peripheral devices to ensure seamless end-to-end functionality.
  • Monitor the ongoing performance of complex networks and communication systems, identifying trends, anomalies, and areas for optimisation before they impact service quality.
  • Plan and support the development of customer access network infrastructure, contributing to capacity planning, design reviews, and upgrade programmes.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation including inventory logs, equipment records, asset statuses, and communication policies, procedures, and quality standards in accordance with organisational and regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide clear technical advice and support to internal stakeholders, project teams, and end users on telecommunications systems, configurations, and best practices.
  • Liaise with vendors, suppliers, and external service providers to coordinate procurement, installation activities, and ongoing service delivery, whilst monitoring contractual performance and obligations.
  • Support the design and optimisation of network architecture, contributing technical input to projects aimed at improving reliability, scalability, and performance.
  • Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and equipment testing to ensure network integrity and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Assist in the development and review of technical documentation, including network diagrams, standard operating procedures, and incident reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on telecommunications projects, providing technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle from scoping through to commissioning and handover.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • A diploma, advanced diploma, or bachelor's degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent industry experience in lieu of formal qualifications.

  • Solid understanding of network protocols, telecommunications standards, and systems integration principles.
  • Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting network hardware, software, and associated technologies including switches, routers, and transmission equipment.
  • Experience with network monitoring tools and fault management systems, with the ability to interpret performance data and take corrective action.
  • Strong documentation skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, produce technical reports, and adhere to quality and compliance standards.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work methodically under pressure, and deliver outcomes within agreed timeframes.
  • A valid Australian driver's licence, as field-based work and site visits may be required.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call roster or undertake out-of-hours work when operational requirements demand.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant industry certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent telecommunications qualifications.
