Technical Writer – Defence

Heaton Rail Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

We’re currently recruiting for a Technical Writer for our client, a global leader in defence engineering and manufacturing.

This is a full-time, permanent onsite position based in the South Canberra district. This position offers a package of $86K–$104K + 14% Super + 6 weeks annual leave, along with long-term career growth in a high-tech facility.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Develop and write technical publications, manuals, and documentation for defence systems
  • Liaise with engineers, technicians, and stakeholders to identify documentation needs
  • Review and edit technical and non-technical content for clarity and accuracy
  • Create graphics, diagrams, and illustrations to support technical content
  • Ensure documentation meets relevant standards and client requirements
Skills and Requirements
  • Engineering or Trade qualifications (Cert IV and above)
  • Strong background in technical writing within Defence, engineering, or related industries
  • Knowledge or experience in electro‑mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, HVAC and/or radio frequency (RF) systems
  • Excellent written communication skills, including ability to write in Plain English
  • Exposure to relevant standards and tools such as DEF (Aust) 5692B, S1000D, Solidworks, CATIA CAD, and XML/structured authoring would be highly regarded

NOTE: To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen and be eligible to obtain and maintain an AGSVA clearance – NV1.
