Job summary

Optus is seeking a senior network security expert based in Macquarie Park, Sydney. You will design, govern and manage secure network architectures, leading engineering, cyber security and operations to deliver secure firewall solutions, including Fortinet and Check Point platforms.

The role drives security improvements and risk assessment while mentoring others. You will contribute hands-on scripting, support incident response, and ensure designs meet security standards and lifecycle

Qualifications

  • Degree in Telecommunications Engineering or equivalent.
  • 8+ years in telecommunications or large enterprise environments with Fortinet/Check Point expertise.
  • Strong understanding of operational processes and fault management.
  • Proven ability to manage major faults across platforms and communicate with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience in testing/PoC environments and understanding methodologies.
  • Background in large-scale network design with scripting as an advantage.

  • Design, implement, and maintain firewall solutions using Fortinet and Check Point.
  • Provide Tier-3 technical support to resolve complex security incidents.
  • Translate business, security, and network requirements into scalable firewall designs.
  • Deliver firewall migrations, upgrades, and high-availability implementations.
  • Apply routing and switching knowledge to analyze network architectures.
  • Collaborate with Network, Cyber Security, and Operations teams for end-to-end security designs.
  • Perform security assessments and root-cause analysis for firewall/VPN services.
  • Contribute scripting to improve operational efficiency and repeatability.
  • Ensure designs align with security standards and lifecycle requirements.

Job description

Based in Macquarie Park, Sydney - this role is a senior network security expert responsible for designing, governing, and managing secure network architectures and platforms, while ensuring compliance with security standards and best practices. It involves close collaboration with engineering, cyber security, and operations teams to design and approve secure solutions such as firewalls, segmentation, and encryption technologies. The position also drives security improvements, provides technical leadership and mentorship, and supports risk assessment, incident response, and continuous enhancement of network security.

This role requires hands on experience

Your day to day will consist of
  • Lead PIR and rep CSE across all problem management related engagements
  • Design, implement, and maintain firewall solutions using Fortinet (FW, Proxy, VPN) and Check Point platforms
  • Provide Tier‑3 technical support to resolve complex and critical network security incidents
  • Translate business, security, and network requirements into scalable and secure firewall designs
  • Deliver firewall migrations, upgrades, policy optimisation, and high‑availability implementations
  • Apply routing and switching knowledge to interpret network architectures and security traffic flows
  • Work closely with Network, Cyber Security, and Operations teams to ensure secure end‑to‑end designs
  • Perform security assessments, troubleshooting, and root‑cause analysis for firewall and VPN services
  • Contribute basic scripting and automation to improve operational efficiency and repeatability
  • Ensure designs align with security standards, best practices, and lifecycle (EOL/EOS) requirements
What makes you perfect for the role
  • Degree in Telecommunications Engineering (or related field) or equivalent experience
  • At least 8 years' experience in telecommunications or large enterprise environments, with strong expertise in Fortinet and Checkpoint
  • Solid understanding of operational processes, fault management, and diagnosing customer issues
  • Proven ability to manage major faults across multiple platforms and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders (up to GM level)
  • Experience in testing/PoC environments, including understanding methodologies and platform limitations
  • Background in large-scale network design and implementation, with scripting skills (e.g., Python, Perl) as an advantage
