Job summary

University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is seeking a Technical Services Officer to join the Physics, Chemistry & Forensics Technical Services team. The role provides practical support for teaching, research, and specialist laboratory activities across diverse facilities.

You will prepare resources, maintain equipment readiness, support safe work practices, and help day-to-day operations run smoothly within teaching and research programs.

Qualifications

• Relevant degree or advanced diploma with relevant experience.
• Experience supporting teaching or research in a laboratory environment.

• Experience in chemical‑intensive environments and/or lasers where applicable.

About the Team

Science Technical Services supports the Faculty of Science by enabling safe, reliable and effective teaching, research and specialist facility operations across a diverse range of scientific disciplines. The team works in partnership with academic and professional staff to maintain laboratory readiness, support practical teaching and research activity, manage equipment and specialist facilities, and uphold safe work practices. Science Technical Services provides support across areas including Biosciences, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Forensic Sciences, Materials Science and Anatomical Sciences.

About the Role

The Technical Services Officer is a key member of the Physics, Chemistry & Forensics Technical Services team, providing practical technical support for teaching, research and specialist laboratory activities. The role supports a diverse range of facilities, including chemical-intensive laboratories, materials testing spaces, optics laboratories, instrumentation areas and other specialist environments. Working under the general direction of the Technical Services Coordinator, the position prepares laboratory resources, maintains equipment readiness, supports safe work practices and helps ensure efficient day-to-day operations across teaching and research activities.

Role Responsibilities

• Prepare laboratories, equipment, materials and consumables for teaching and research activities.

About You

The preferred candidate will have practical technical experience in a laboratory, teaching or research support environment, with the ability to contribute to safe, efficient and well-prepared laboratory operations. You will bring a service-focused approach, sound attention to detail and the confidence to work across a range of technical activities within Physics, Chemistry and Forensic Sciences. The successful candidate will be able to support laboratory preparation, equipment operation and maintenance, consumables management, safe work practices and day-to-day technical support for staff and students.

Skills, attributes and knowledge

• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative and service-focused approach.
• Ability to plan, prioritise and complete technical tasks within changing operational requirements.
• Practical problem-solving skills and sound judgement to elevate issues appropriately.
• Attention to detail when maintaining equipment, records, registers and technical documentation.
• Working knowledge of relevant laboratory or field procedures, WHS requirements and risk controls.

Experience

• Relevant degree or advanced diploma with relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Experience supporting teaching or research in a laboratory environment.
• Experience operating and maintaining technical equipment and coordinating routine servicing or calibration.
• Experience in chemical-intensive environments and/or supporting higher-risk activities, e.g. lasers, where applicable, applying local controls and safe work practices
• Experience applying WHS procedures, safe work practices and risk controls in a technical setting.

What We Offer

• Base Salary Range: $ 87,295.00 - $ 99,865.00 (HEW5) plus 17% superannuation (pension)
• The position is full time and will be made on a continuing basis.
