Job summary

UTS in Sydney's Faculty of Science seeks a Technical Services Officer to provide practical support for teaching, research and specialist laboratory activities across Physics, Chemistry and Forensics.

You will prepare resources, maintain equipment, support safe work practices and help ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly across laboratories, with opportunities to contribute across a wide range of facilities. This full‑time role offers HEW5 level pay and comprehensive staff benefits.

About the Team

Science Technical Services supports the Faculty of Science by enabling safe, reliable and effective teaching, research and specialist facility operations across a diverse range of scientific disciplines. The team works in partnership with academic and professional staff to maintain laboratory readiness, support practical teaching and research activity, manage equipment and specialist facilities, and uphold safe work practices. Science Technical Services provides support across areas including Biosciences, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Forensic Sciences, Materials Science and Anatomical Sciences.

About the Role

The Technical Services Officer is a key member of the Physics, Chemistry & Forensics Technical Services team, providing practical technical support for teaching, research and specialist laboratory activities. The role supports a diverse range of facilities, including chemical‑intensive laboratories, materials testing spaces, optics laboratories, instrumentation areas and other specialist environments. Working under the general direction of the Technical Services Coordinator, the position prepares laboratory resources, maintains equipment readiness, supports safe work practices and helps ensure efficient day‑to‑day operations across teaching and research activities.

Role Responsibilities

• Prepare laboratories, equipment, materials and consumables for teaching and research activities.
• Provide practical technical assistance, routine troubleshooting and support during laboratory activities.
• Complete routine equipment checks and coordinate servicing, calibration and repairs as required.
• Maintain stock, registers, records and safety documentation in line with local procedures.
• Follow WHS requirements, support risk controls and promptly elevate hazards or non‑routine issues.

About You

The preferred candidate will have practical technical experience in a laboratory, teaching or research support environment, with the ability to contribute to safe, efficient and well‑prepared laboratory operations. You will bring a service‑focused approach, sound attention to detail and the confidence to work across a range of technical activities within Physics, Chemistry and Forensic Sciences. The successful candidate will be able to support laboratory preparation, equipment operation and maintenance, consumables management, safe work practices and day‑to‑day technical support for staff and students.

• Experience operating and maintaining technical equipment and coordinating routine servicing or calibration.
• Experience in chemical‑intensive environments and/or supporting higher‑risk activities, e.g. lasers, where applicable, applying local controls and safe work practices
• Experience applying WHS procedures, safe work practices and risk controls in a technical setting.

Remuneration

What We Offer

Base Salary Range: $ 87,295.00 - $ 99,865.00 (HEW5) plus 17% superannuation (pension)

The position is full time and will be made on a continuing basis.

Selection Criteria

• Proven capacity to plan, prioritise and manage tasks efficiently within tight timeframes and changing operational requirements.
• High attention to detail in technical work and documentation, including maintaining accurate local records and logs as required.
• Practical experience in operating, maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment within scope, and coordinating servicing/repairs as required.
• Experience in chemical‑intensive environments and/or supporting higher‑risk activities, e.g. lasers, where applicable, applying local controls and safe work practices.
• Demonstrated application of WHS and risk management practices, including following SOPs, contributing to risk assessments and maintaining local records/registers as required.
