Job summary

WorkSafe Victoria is seeking a Technical Recoveries Advisor based in Wadawurrung/Geelong with a hybrid work pattern (3 days in the office) and occasional travel to Melbourne and court locations. You will identify, assess and pursue recoveries of paid compensation from negligent third parties, applying legal principles and strategic judgement.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in recoveries, common law litigation management, insurance litigation or a related legal environment.
  • Strong knowledge of workers compensation legislation, negligence principles, insurance law and litigation processes.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret complex legal documentation, pleadings, affidavits and case law.
  • Experience managing legal practitioners and providing effective litigation instructions within a complex regulatory environment.

Technical Recoveries Advisor $124,535 per annum + 12% superannuation Full time, Fixed Term Contract opportunity until Feb 2028 Wadawurrung/Geelong based role (hybrid work from home - 3 days a week in office) with occasional travel to Melbourne and court locations as required

About the opportunity

The Dispute Management Division plays a critical role in supporting WorkSafe's purpose of reducing workplace harm and improving outcomes for injured workers. The division is responsible for the management of common law claims and related litigation, recovery of compensation from liable third parties, oversight of claim-related litigation, and management of WorkSafe's legal panel firms and associated legal service providers. As the Technical Recoveries Advisor, you'll play a key role in protecting the Victorian workers' compensation scheme by identifying, assessing and pursuing recoveries of paid compensation from negligent third parties. Working within a specialist litigation and recoveries environment, you'll apply your legal expertise and commercial judgement to manage complex matters, influence strategic outcomes and support the effective recovery of compensation on behalf of WorkSafe. What you will do
  • Identify, assess and manage potential recoveries under Section 369 of the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013, applying legal principles to determine liability and recovery prospects.
  • Manage and resolve complex recovery matters through negotiation, mediation and litigation, including direct engagement with insurers and the provision of instructions to WorkSafe's legal panel firms.
  • Provide technical oversight and strategic direction on litigation matters, supporting effective legal decision-making and ensuring high-quality outcomes across recoveries portfolios.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including legal practitioners, claims agents, insurers, courts and government agencies to gather information and progress matters efficiently.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by supporting the development of litigation frameworks, legal processes and recoveries strategies.

About you

You are an experienced legal, litigation or recoveries professional who enjoys working on complex matters and delivering strategic outcomes. You bring strong technical expertise, sound judgement and the ability to influence stakeholders in a challenging and fast-paced environment. You are highly analytical, commercially minded and confident balancing legal, operational and reputational considerations when making decisions. Most importantly, you're motivated by meaningful work and the opportunity to contribute to positive outcomes for Victorian workers.

Additionally, you will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Extensive experience in recoveries, common law litigation management, insurance litigation or a related legal environment.
  • Strong knowledge of workers compensation legislation, negligence principles, insurance law and litigation processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret complex legal documentation, pleadings, affidavits, legal advice and case law.
  • Experience managing legal practitioners and providing effective litigation instructions within a complex regulatory, legal or insurance environment.
  • Highly developed negotiation, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build productive relationships across a diverse stakeholder group.
  • Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to manage multiple matters and competing priorities.
  • Experience identifying legal, strategic and reputational risks and making sound recommendations to support effective decision-making.
Qualifications - Desirable

Relevant tertiary qualifications in Law or a related discipline, and/or significant experience working in a legal, litigation, recoveries, insurance or professional services environment.
