Overview

We are seeking a highly capable Technical Radio Systems Engineer with strong hands‑on experience in HF, VHF, UHF, and emerging platforms such as PTToC and satellite communications. This role supports our communications division across PNG, the Solomon Islands, and Australia, providing high‑level design, technical validation, documentation, and proposal development for major mining, maritime, government and enterprise customers.

This is an engineering‑heavy position: perfect for someone who is confident in HF system design, field verification procedures, link calculations, equipment configuration, and producing well‑structured technical proposals. Remote work is supported, with travel available where required.

• Lead design of HF, VHF, UHF radio systems, including:
• Codan HF networks
• Motorola, Tait, and Icom digital systems (DMR, P25, IDAS, Tier II/III, Trunked)
• Conventional, IP‑linked and multi‑site repeater networks
• Antenna systems, feedlines, combiners, filters and power systems
• Develop complete system architecture drawings, block diagrams, RF path analysis, and coverage considerations.
• Support design and integration of PTToC (Push‑to‑Talk over Cellular) and satellite communications solutions (OneWeb, Starlink, Inmarsat, Iridium).
• Produce professionally‑structured technical proposals, equipment lists, scopes of work and methodology descriptions.
• Prepare test plans, commissioning procedures, sign‑off sheets, FAT/SAT documentation and hand‑over packages.
• Generate high‑quality AutoCAD / Visio drawings, single‑line diagrams, network topologies and rack layouts.
• Review system designs submitted by our teams and external vendors to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.

Project & Customer Support

• Assist our teams in PNG, Australia and the South Pacific with technical reviews, troubleshooting, and remote commissioning.
• Provide guidance for major tenders and proposals, including system architecture, frequency planning and equipment selection.
• Review site information, interpret technical data from customers, and translate requirements into engineered solutions.
• Support project managers with technical risk assessments, bill of materials verification and project sign‑off.

Quality & Compliance

• Ensure all solutions comply with relevant standards (IGRF/ITU, ACMA/NICTA guidelines, Codan HF best practice, Motorola/Tait/Icom specifications).
• Maintain accurate documentation and version control across drawings, specifications and proposal packs.
• Conduct remote audits of delivered systems and offer improvement recommendations.

Required Experience

• Minimum 5+ years in RF communications engineering.
• Strong hands‑on capability with HF radio systems – preferably Codan (Envoy, Sentry, NGT, 2110, transportable systems).
• Experience with:
• Motorola MOTOTRBO systems
• Barrett / RapidM / Q-MAC an advantage
• Understanding of ALE (2G/3G/4G), digital voice, data over HF, linking, and interoperability.
• Strong written English: capable of producing customer‑facing proposals and engineering documents.
• Ability to work efficiently in a remote engineering support model.
• Highly proficient with AutoCAD or equivalent, MS Visio, link calculators (HF & VHF/UHF), and radio programming software.

Preferred Attributes

• Experience working on communications in mining, utilities, defence, government, maritime or remote area projects.
• Ability to interpret site surveys, coverage reports, and path profiles.
• Comfortable leading design work with limited input and producing polished deliverables.
• Ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
